We live in a police state - it is official.

We got to the demo about 11:30 and the place was already crawling with police. Grabbed a beer and waited till 12. Went to the meeting place by the toilets - about 20 people all told. Police congregated nearby.

Police swooped in and surrounded us all and started to issue a section 14. Some of us moved away so that we didn't hear the conditions. Thought the police were gonna stop us but they did let us out begrudgingly. Found out later that the conditions were 10 minute demo only from 12:16 to 12:26. Demo past this time or anywhere else in dover and risk arrest. We weren't covered by this as we hadn't heard it http://s1.images.proboards.com/wink.gif

We wandered around and then went to see what else we could get up to and awaited news of the coach from London. Turns out this was stopped, given notice of the section 14, and since the time had expired and they wouldn't be allowed to demo anywhere, they were not let off the coach and eventually escorted out of Dover.

We had a beer and a think. Meanwhile the people that had been given the section 14 were allowed a demo by the Western Docks (the Eastern Docks being the ones we are demoing against http://s1.images.proboards.com/rolleyes.gif) Not for long, they were moved on and started to demo more towards town. They attempted to interact a bit with the public and the police decided to arrest people and chase people away.

We met up with people back near the toilets. Very heavy police presence. We wandered around trying to draw the police away from people that they were harrassing. We had no banners, we said nothing, we just walked around and chatted to people.

Finally the police got annoyed with us walking along the promenade (!!!!!) and stopped us under a section 50 - suspicion of having engaged in anti-social behaviour. I challenged him to give an example of what this might be. He said I may have blocked roads, chanted, waved a placard. I said, you know I haven't done that, why have you pulled me. He said I was causing a nuisance and part of a procession. I said I was not chanting or causing a nuisance. He said I was walking up and down the promenade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was one copper questioning me, 2 riot cops, and a copper videoing me. He asked for my name and address on threat of arrest, and my date of birth. Gave name and address (eventually after the exchange above) refused date of birth saying he had no right to that info. That set them all back and they weren't sure if I was allowed to refuse that info. He asked me to volunteer it, I refused.

All the while they were saying we were in the wrong for not giving 7 days notice of the demo. The law says no notice is required for a demo. 7 days notice or whatever is practical is required for a march. No notice for a demo, at all.

While they radio checked my details I gave the riot police a run down of the shit they were pulling. 10 minutes allowed for a demo is taking the piss. Pulling people under section 50 which is designed for dealing with teenage yobs is taking the piss.
I made my feelings known. I knew my rights and the law, and they did not intimidate me. I think they got more than they bargained for when they pulled us. http://s1.images.proboards.com/wink.gif

It was heavy handed policing, and it was very public. There may be some footage on TV, tonight, as there were undercover reporters there.

Please note this was a perfectly legal peaceful demo. A section 14 was expected but it should have reasonable conditions. 10 minutes is not reasonable.

It wasn't even a demo planned - just a mass leafletting!

That's why there weren't any banners or megaphones etc. We were armed with the most dangerous weapon of all - information to the public. No wonder the police didn't want us to do anything - people might have found out information about what was going on in Dover!

Heavy handed police tactics when all people are doing is handing out leaflets is starting to happen way too often. I notice a copper never stops people handing out vodafone leaflets by imposing a section 14.

You'll end up with an ASBO for walking on the promenade next. Ridiculous

We need to stick together and do something about the police and their illegal activities!
Another account of Dover on the 29th..
Dover was a nightmare of out of control police yesterday. They imposed what may turn out to be an illegal Section 14 on peaceful people who only wanted to leaflet the public. They were rude, cynical, threatening and members of the public were shocked and made complaints. One police van announced over the PA system "test perfumes on animals" and as we left the seafront in our car they shouted "get a life" after us. Passengers in our car were forced under threat of arrest to give their names and addresses under a 'new' Section 50 order that we had never heard of and neither had our solicitor when phoned immediately afterwards. She will be looking it up!! Earlier in the day a sergeant walked across to me and physically pushed me off the pavement, saying that I was obstructing him, when I certainly wasn't - a clear case of assault. I have written my complaint to the chief constable and have copied it to MPs, Home Office etc. etc. Please, please, please will EVERYONE who was there do the same. This ignorant mob mascarading as impartial (!) police officers must be exposed for what they are. The general public saw it and voted with their comments as some officers tried to explain to them what they were doing. A woman who was standing on the prom just holding a video camera and looking out to sea was told to give her name and address or face arrest. A couple on holiday from South Africa who took a leaflet and a copy of the Shoreham Protester were filmed and asked for their name and address, which they gave for fear of missing their ship. Now is not the time to go home with our tails between our legs and complaining to each other and feeling frustrated. Now is the time for us all to pull together, pool our experiences from the day, and any photos, video that we may have so that it can get to the solicitors who will deal with the cases of the 4 arrested (2 accepted a caution under duress and this could be overturned) as well as the infringement of our right to peacefully leaflet the public without intimidation. Write your recollections down NOW while they are fresh in your head. Keep any bits of evidence (eg the Sec 14 notices) for possible future use and let KALE know that you are able and willing to come forward if necessary - PO Box 363 Folkestone, Kent CT20 3GJ. Anyone who can act as a witness for any of those arrested should make themselves known to KALE, please contact me with your details at shoreham.protester@ntlworld.com and I will pass your details on to solicitor. Even the tiniest bit of seemingly insignificant info can sometimes be valuable in the bigger picture. We are not isolated individual as the police and the state would like us to be. We are a movement trying to better the lives of our fellow species and we must never allow ourselves to be intimidated in this appalling manner.

OMG how awful for you. What were you leafletting about?

It is a protest against the export of live dairy calves to Europe.

These extremely young (days old), unwanted waste products of the dairy industry are sold cheaply at auction, packed into trucks, driven across the country, and sailed to France. From there they are taken to the veal farms across Europe to spend the rest of their short, tortured lives trapped in small crates.

That makes me want to cry - when I see animals being transported along the motorways here I have to turn my head away. Good for you for leafletting - I would help if I was in the area.

Oh Rob - can you explain why they ship calves out of the UK? Don't they produce enough in Europe?

There is a regular demo this Saturday (first Saturday of the month) 12 noon - 3pm if anyone is interested in helping out and showing the police we will not be intimidated.

The campaign in Dover is supported by many groups, including animal welfare groups, as well as animal rights groups, and many others, including VIVA.

We have a huge dairy industry (heavily subsidised, too). Every dairy cow will produce on average one unwanted male calf every 2 years. During BSE crisis these were immediately destroyed.

Veal crates are banned in the UK, so they are exported. I'm not sure why there is such a demand for them. How many people eat veal? Not so many in the UK, thankfully, although it is unfortunately legal to sell veal, and supply calves to the industry.

The poor things used to be sent to America too before BSE. I don't know if that has resumed. Live export of all animals for "food" should be banned. It is illegal to export a live horse for consumption.

They eat horse meat over here  Veal is really popular too. So sad.

They were trying to fly them out, too, which presumably would have let them sell them further afield. Fortunately the two airports concerned have decided it is too likely to be troublesome. Be nice if they had done it for welfare reasons, but any reason will do.

Not as far as I'm aware - they like their veal too much :(

Hmmm - Wikipedia actually thinks the name Italia may come from the Greek meaning "Land of Cattle Calves or Veal"

Do you have a vegan or AR group you can join? You could do leafletting. Let people know the cruelty in the dairy and veal industries. Affecting the market for veal will help us over here.

I shall certainly put my mind to it. I am a member of LAV (Lega Anti-Vivisezione) and have done some stalls, getting people to sign petitions and so on, but their focus in the short time I've been with them has been on the cruelty in the Chinese fur farms and illegal dog kennels (money received by private firms who keep dogs in appalling conditions). They don't seem to concentrate so much on the food industries. I'll see what I can do to change that.
