The Candle Cafe Cookbook

The Candle Cafe cookbook has pictures of some of the recipes but not all. It's a great cookbook (and restaurant in NYC). Here's some reviews and prices. I bought this cookbook last Wednesday - anyone else have it and use it?

It was kinda an impulse buy, I was at a local veggie deli place getting lunch, and starting flipping through it and just decided to buy it. There are a few recipes that look good to me, but a lot turn me off with lots of asian ingredients that I have no idea where I will find. All of the bean dishes call for kombu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombu), a lot of the recipes call for umeboshi vinegar, shoyu or tamari (can I just use Bragg's in place?), Hijiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijiki) and other stuff I am not sure where to find.

Also, even though my partner likes asian food, he can't stand soy-sauce flavored stuff, so I am not sure how much the seasoning will come through.

Anyway, I need to try it out now to post an actual review, but I was wondering if others liked this book or found it useful.

I just ordered this book and am pretty curious - will let you know when I've had the chance to try a few recipes out :)

I've had this one for a while and only made the portobello burgers with mango chutney. REALLY yum. But I found a lot of the recipes look really fiddly, sort of. Like making sauces from scratch - of course fresh is best, but I'm pretty lazy.

I agree. I've made some of the simpler things - French toast, garlic mashed potatoes, really delicious! But I looked at the appetisers section the other night for a dinner party with friends, and gave up, because they were just too complicated, or I didn't have all the ingredients to hand.

There's some gorgeous photos in that book though. The one on the front cover.. gotta give that a go someday. drooly

Garlic Mashed Potatoes - very easy, very yummy, and one of the few recipes which require less than fifteen ingredients :D

I'm kind of irritated that they expect me to turn on the oven to roast a handful of nuts, or to always use purified water. Get real, people.
