I was there for a business conference several years ago. It seemed like a terrible place to be a vegan. I was only vegetarian at the time and it was rough.
I hope you find some friendly vegan Floridians.
Cheers,

Hi, veganpixie. I live in Gainesville, have been here for about seven years. Only been vegan for about a year, but I find it entirely easy to be vegan here. Some of my favorite places to eat out are Gyro Plus, Leo's, Reggae Shack, El Indio, The Top, Red Dragon, Las Margaritas, and Golden Buddha. And I get groceries at Ward's & Mother Earth & the downtown farmer's market.
I can't imagine anyone would have trouble being vegetarian here, unless they were stuck in the very commercial, chain-restaurant-filled parts of town...
How long have you lived here?

hi jamboxrock,
I'm sorry for the delay in replying to your reply to my post. I'm so tired and my week has been so hectic with job search it didn't occur to me to look here to see if there were any replies...so, sorry about that. Well, from what my husband and I have personally experienced, being veg or vegan here in North Central Florida, or even anywhere in Florida itself, is very difficult indeed. There aren't any 100% meatless non-meat vegetarian restaurants anywhere and there are those places that serve natural healthy organic food, but they believe that because they have vegan options and menu options that are meatless, that must mean they're vegetarian. I find it very frustrating when I tell someone who is non-vegetarian that I'm looking for a meatless vegetarian place to eat and they recommend a place that's veg-friendly. *sigh* It doesn't help. :-( we're seriously considering, once we have decent income, to move to a place called Avon Park, which we have learned is more progressive, has vegetarians and meditators. There are krishna devotees here, but believe it or not, even with their influence, there are no 100% complete vegetarian meatless restaurants in this region...ugh! I'll write more when I can, thank you for listening and your support!
*hugs*,
pixie

Hi Vegan in North/Central Florida,
I live in Middleburg, which is out in the boonies 1 hour north of Gainesville. (kind of in the middle between Jacksonville and Gainesvillle). I don't know a single vegan who lives near me- not a single one. I just became vegan recently and was vegetarian for 2 years- I found that difficult to find friends and good food places in this area. We did have a whole food market open in Mandarin, so that is a good thing- you can get tofu dinners all made for you there. (it is about an hour from me though) Any restaurant suggestions would be great. I know they have a raw food rest. in St. Augustine- yummy food but stupid hours. They have a vegetarian rest. in St. Aug also, but again- drive by there on a Friday night after 4 and they are closed- grrrrr. So annoying. Nice to meet you!

I see this is an older thread, but I'm in Fort Myers. As far as I know, I'm the only vegan here. Woe is me.
