My boyfriend bought these (http://www.agraria.org/coltivazioniarboree/mapo.htm)the other day thinking they were limes :D Does anyone recognise them or know the English name for them? According to the site they're a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit. And what did you use them for, any suggestions?

Could it be a variety of Tangelo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangelo)?

There's lots of info about mandarin hybrids here: http://www.rickharrison.com/texts/info/mandarins.html

It's interesting that the site referenced about Mapo says they are meant to be a cross between a yellow fruit and an orange fruit, resulting in a green skin. Perhaps they are unripe? To put another way:

Half way between tangerine and grapefruit according to a site I found, it would make a nice juice for breakfast if you have enough.

I believe I used to eat these when I was in China... I just peeled and ate the individual slices.. The skin was pretty thick if I remember correctly.

I want to try one now... they are natural aren't they? No GM fruit for me!

oops, I see that you already know they are half tangerine and grapefruit. I think I am a bit dizzy after having posted on the 'do you like your breasts' link, more tangerine than grapefruit for me on there I think..LOL

They taste like a more tart version of a mandarin, I wouldn't say they taste anything like a grapefruit. They taste good, but a bit too sour to eat by themselves - I'd probably put them in fruit salad.
