Not sure I'm posting this in the right area, but ..

I'm a student at Kingston University (South London) and need to find accodomation for next academic year by late August. I would much prefer to move in with veg*ns than the meat eaters I currently live with. :)

If there's anything anyone can offer in or near the Kingston area (Surbiton, New Malden etc.) that would be great, send me a private message and we'll sort something out!

(Edit: I guess I should add: I'm non-smoker but don't mind others smoking)

Check out this link (http://www.vegcom.org.uk/vc4/vclist.php?rgn=STH&cat=OFF)

Also check out the houseshare websites and do a filter on veg*n ones.

I think it would be very rare to find a vegan houseshare but your never know.

heh - I'm a vegan from south london looking for accom around the same time too. Though not sure two Trotskyist vegans in one house from different political organisations would be a good idea. ;P

Which organisation/party are you from?

(heh heh .. nah I can appreciate that the movement is not embodied in any one party ... the SWP has a presence at kingston uni and no other socialist group does, hence i joined them.)

I'm a member of the Socialist Party [http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/], Socialist Students [http://www.socialiststudents.org.uk/] is the student org it's affiliated to. Actually used to be in the SWP but left for various reasons. I have friends in other organisations of course! I like talking to others on the left, it's a shame it doesn't happen more often.

Living in New Cross, go to Goldsmiths College at the moments. Looking for somewhere for next term in SE London mainly.

That's cool, I thought you might have been in the Spartacus League for a moment there. I know the SP get involved and do a lot of stuff ... so it's all good. Seems to me the only difference between SWP and SP is how they view Russian communism (i.e. as a fascist state or a degenerative workers' state, respectively).

Out of interest, why did you leave the SWP?

not sure there are many vegans in the ranks of the sparts - a petit-bourgeois distraction! :P

The SWP don't characterise Stalinist Russia as fascist I presume, but rather state capitalist? The SP does adhear to the theory of the degenerated workers state. The SP get involved in every-day issues, fighting for better pay and conditions, against privitisation - but realise that we need a revolution to defend the gains we win.

Out of interest, why did you leave the SWP?

I had a shopping list of reasons as long as your arm when I left the party. Lack of democracy being the main one: The way the SWP organises expresses (to my mind) a fairly clear and obvious violation of the basic principles of Marxist-Leninism. Rules around conference seem more akin to work of a masonic lodge than that of a healthy democratic Trotskyist organisation (extremely limited debating periods, a conference clouded in un-necessary mystery to those external to it, etc). The way the party organises meetings and responds to criticism is monumentally depressing - when I was a member those in my branch would brag about never having read any criticisms of the party! Those that raised criticisms were labelled as 'far left sectarians' - rarely the case. At larger meetings, those critical of the party line were rarely ever called upon to speak - and if they managed to, were liable to be subject to torrent of (often personalised) abuse, along the above lines ("failure to build the movement", "obsession with theory", etc). The RESPECT project seems, to my mind, quite depressing; it has failed to mobilise larger sections beyond a fairly limited cross-section of society. Communists and socialists fight all forms of opression, but realise that it's only by mobilising individuals on a class basis that we can realise the historic socialist role of a revolutionary society; Socialists in RESPECT have voted down motions that would see their representatives on a workers wage, that would increase democracy - basic stuff. I was actually a member of RESPECT at the very start, before it was certain how the formation would plan out.

I state the above not to attack you personally, you understand; those were some of my reasons for leaving.

"I state the above not to attack you personally, you understand; those were some of my reasons for leaving."

Of course! Some of those reasons I accept are fair points. I can definitely understand the criticisms of Respect. I had considered joining, but haven't, and don't think I will. My main problem is it's reformist; what the SWP is supposed to be against, surely. I HAVE heard the "far left sectarian" dismissal of critics often. It's never been clear if those critics were indeed sectarians or people with different viewpoints.
As for the lack of democracy, I can't say I've experienced that - but I have only been in the party for a relatively short period of time. It seems to me that anyone who wants to raise a point is entitled to, and then it can be discussed openly.

"The SWP don't characterise Stalinist Russia as fascist I presume, but rather state capitalist?"

Yes, sorry, my mistake, it is characterised as state capitalist (sometimes I type without thinking). By fascist I meant we view it that the workers had no control. Production was dictated from above.

Hello everyone,

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this. I'd love to be more active in the Vegan Forum world, but I find it very big and confusing.

Anyway, I'm a 21 year old guy who's just finished his degree (Computer Science with a Year in Industry) and has a job lined up in London. It's starting imminently and the person I was planning to live with isn't able to move right now, so I am slightly stuck. Ideally I'd like to share a place with one or two other vegans/veggies. Good public transport to Oxford Street or Tottenham Court Road is a must, as that's where I'm working. I'm clean-living (no alcohol, no drugs) but am not averse to an occasional late night. Broadband is a must due to my geeky tendencies.

I'd appreciate any leads you can give me, and of course the ultimate goal will be for someone here to say "Hey, I'm looking for someone!". I'm happy to answer questions about myself here or via email or however you care to - my contact details are available at http://www.alexpounds.com/contact.php.

Thanks.

Yep, I've had a look there and done a post in their "accommodation wanted" section. I've had a couple of responses but nothing too promising yet...

Dunno about a squat, but if you're in London, we have pretty regular vegan meet-ups here! Just check the thread in the members' section.

Yes! We have regular meetups. They are like a ritual these days. They happen every month. You can indeed hang out with cool people in one of these meetups. Everyone here is cool.

Ooh I'm going to Kingston (Knights Park campus though) in September, maybe I'll see you! I'm looking for somewhere too but I think I'm moving in with the other 'arf.

I go to Penrhyn Road campus, which is about five minutes walk over a bridge from Knights Park.

I have actually found accomodation now, I live in this kickass flat that's just round the corner from Penrhyn Road. No one else has moved in yet, but they will doubtless be bastard omnivores.

What are you studying?

Russ

It's open until 2am most days, yeah. It's also pretty huge. Without it, I would not have finished a single essay.

I'm studying politics, when I actually make it in for lectures. It's hard to find the motivation a lot of the time.

What are you studying? By the way, if you move into halls ... well, none of them are good. I lived in ClayHell for a year, and Seething Hells isn't much better ...

I'm doing Fine Art.
I hope I don't have to move into halls- I'm hoping that I find a flat, but its looking doubtful that it'll just be the two of us.
It's so expensive to live in Kingston. He's vegan as well though, which is awesome. I think we've realised a flat with just the two of us is doubtful.
Might have to take you up on the offer of a flat share!
