Hi there,

Last night I had chilli 'sausages' with wholegrain pasta and veggies to use up a pack of ghastly sausages (can't remember the name now) because whilst they satisfied the vegan criteria, they were full of unhealthy ingredients.

Can you recommend a vegan brand of sausages that are reasonably healthy? I'm not sure if there are any out there or they actually exist, but if there is, let me know!

The Redwood ones don't have any hydrogenated fat but I'm not sure they're exactly a health food even so - you can look at an ingredient list here (click on the sausage packet!)

The taifun tofu grill ones are quite nice too:click here (http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/418420.html)

Tofu 80% (water, soyabeans), cold pressed sunflower oil, oatmeal, vegetable broth, spices, sea salt, herbs.

I'm not sure if that's healthy enough though...

Yes, those Taifun ones are nice and probably pretty healthy too. I didn't think of them because our local Waitrose has stopped stocking them - must write and complain.

i wish they would make quorn sausages vegan. i was always quite fond of those - and they're really low fat too :(

I really liked the Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages but they have egg in them :( I've emailed them a few times to ask if they have any plans to remove egg from the ingredients (I'm sure it's not needed).

It would be really great if you guys dropped Cauldron a message asking for them to be made without egg!

Let's get them to make egg free food :)

Maybe we should email quorn too?

i've emailed Cauldron before and they're not interested in changing their sausage recipe at the moment. some people have emailed Quorn too and they don't seem to care about vegans at all.

i think Beany tofu sausages are quite healthy and they taste nice but they're very crumbly and fall apart easily. Wicken Fen vegan sausages also seem to be quite healthy and i like them too.

I agree with Harpy, the Redwoods lincolnshire ones are really scrummy:)

Because I'm from South Africa, I doubt we have the same brands, so I won't bother. My sausages are made of Protam (vegetable protein) and they taste really good :)

Wasn't much help, but OH WELL. I like talking.

Has anyone tried making their own? Seems as if it should be feasible seeing you can make burgers etc but I suppose gluing them together might be a problem because of the shape.

i've emailed quorn before to no avail. did it again today for kicks. seems quorn are trying to distance themselves from the alternative eating lifestyles and market themselves instead as a health food product, so if they're moving away from veggies i can't imagine they care too much about ingratiating themselves with vegans.

and i read somewhere that quorn boughtout cauldron, so ho hum.

Oooh, are they the Frys ones? I've noticed they're from S. Africa. Expensive here, but you find them in quite a few places.

Oh dear lord :( There's no hope.

Edit: It appears Premiere bought Quorn, and have recently bought Cauldron too.

What a helpful lot you are! Thanks a lot guys.

The Taifun ones appeal to me the most, the only problem will be finding somewhere to buy them- any ideas? Harpy mentioned Waitrose but I don't have one of those anywhere near me :(

Thanks to Gorilla for mentioning Beany Tofu sausages- they sounds gooood, but again, it's whether or not I can get hold of them.

If I can't find either of the above, I'll plump for redwoods who I'm pretty sure usually get stocked in my local Holland and B.

Thanks again!

You can get the Taifun ones in Fresh & Wild, if you're near one of those, or independent wholefood shops like Infinity Foods in Brighton. Goodness Direct sell them over the web:

The Fry's ones that have been mentioned may be available in H&B as well - in the freezer.

Hmmm... I think so. Aha! I was able to help!

Isn't it weird how some things are readily available in some bits of the country are impossible to find in others! Like, in Cumbria, I can get taifun sausages but not redwoods sausages, and no taifun tofu! None of the supermarkets here stock anything apart from plain tofu and veggie mince.

Wicken Fenn sausages are by far the best I've tasted :D especially mushroom & tarragon. I'm not really a fan of "meat-style" vegan products, and these ones have a more veggie taste to them, almost like homemade...

Taifun Tofu sausages are the healthiest ones I've found, but Redwood's are by far the tastiest.

I'd second that. They're definitely less 'meaty' than most of the vegan sausages I've tried.

Also Beanys make lovely burgers and sausages.

My favourite sausages are far and away the Fry's ones which are just so tasty. In fact all Fry's products are lovely. I get them from the freezer section in bigger branches of Holland and Barrett. :)

My favourite sausages are made by a company called Yves. They make larger sausages in Italian and Polish styles but they also make great mini breakfast sausages. They are all organic and low in fat. I know they are Canadian made, so I'm not sure if they are available elsewhere.

Well healthy, raw and full of vitamins, but not sure if they're quite so good with onion gravy :p
