This may sound like a crazy question, but I really need to know. My husband and I have had to live in the crazy dysfunctional state of Florida (not by choice, mind you) for 5+ years, going on 10, ugh! and we eagerly want to leave the deep south and head north, maybe north east, not sure, but definitely get far away from the fricken deep south, ugh! Apparently, Florida has the highest, or near highest beef production of any state in the union! Now that is a horrifying harrowing statistic and really disgusting and gruesome. I've been searching in yahoo and google for zero or low meat production states and I haven't found anything, except either obnoxious beef promotion commercials for each state or those U.S. cities that are vegetarian-friendly. Veg friendly city is nice, but I really want to live in a state that has far more vegetarians. I think there are a few veggies here in FL but they're rare and many of them aren't even veg, the eat fish and chicken, NOT vegetarian at all! Does anyone here know anything? Can someone help me here? Please let me know, thanks!

I would guess that California and New York have the highest percentage of vegetarians, with Oregon and Washington being high on the list. Many states have no beef production to speak of, but most will have some other animal-related industry. I live in NJ and we have no beef production here that I'm aware of, but we do have a large seafood industry. So, animal abuse is pretty much everywhere.
I highly recommend upstate New York, around either Ithaca or Watkins Glen. They are semi-hippy/punk/New Agey enclaves with good vegan food and an alternative mindset.
Cheers,

I have heard that there are a lot of vegans and vegetarians in California, but I've never been there.
I think that anywhere you go there are going to be meat eaters around, unless you go to live in a vegan commune.

If you search this page [Ctrl +F] you will find the word "vegetarian" used a lot:http://www.hipplanet.com/books/atoz/havens.htm

I live in NYC, and it is extremely veggie-friendly.
There are tons of vegetarian and even vegan restaurants (I ate at one last night), and restaurants which have entire an "vegetarian section" on their menu.
There are farmer's markets everywhere during the summer, and there's one that's open all year round.
Supermarkets also usually have tons of veggie options.
There's also just a general vibe of vegetarianism. People don't look at me funny or anything, and there are lots of groups here that promote a veggie lifestyle, like "food not bombs" which is an organization that feeds vegan food to homeless people.
...you get the idea. also, there's no need to live in manhattan, where the rent is obscenely high. there's brooklyn, the bronx, queens, and staten island (but you don't want to live in staten island....no one really counts it as nyc).
good luck with your search!

Does it have to be a US state?
India is very veggie freindly and Kerala is the most vegetarian state in India.

wow...missoula? that's awesome, if it wasn't so dang cold 75% of the year in montana i would move there in a heart beat...speakin' of which, they got huge horrible fires goin' on there right now, my granddad had to evacuate his cabin....
but anyways...that link, under ohio mentioned the ren. fest and NOT HOOKAHVILLE? crazy.
If you ever come to Ohio, detour through yellow springs and don't just wander through the awesome shops (they have a pizza shop called Ha Ha pizza that is pretty lenient with the toppings...and they have wheat crust...you could def. throw together am awesome vegan pizza...but go to the forrests, they are so beautiful, some of them you'll pass hikers every 5 seconds (all very nice, i have never passed someone that didn't wish me a great morning or afternoon) but then there are some that you won't pass any humans at all...those are my favorite...
yellow springs is like...an escape from the rest of the world, there is almost a surreal glow to the town...they have vegan/veggie shopping...and for those that can't live without milk and eggs they have a small farm that sells it all, you can go and visit the animals to see how they are being treated...
