'PRESS RELEASE

Monkey In A Cage Set to Storm UK Top 10

Animal lovers across the UK are taking part in a mass internet download of protest single ‘Monkey in a Cage’ next week between Monday 20th and Saturday 25th August 2007.

In support of the anti-vivisection campaign focusing on experiments involving primates the protest song, written by International Award winning Singer/Songwriter, Maria Daines, is being released over the internet in a record breaking attempt to launch the message straight into the nation’s Top 10 Music Chart.

Each download of the single will cost 79p with all proceeds being donated to the Welsh primate sanctuary Cefn-yr-Erw based in the Swansea Valley, South Wales.

The key message of the single is to draw attention to the pain inflicted upon more than 10,000 primates used in EU experiments every year.

Backed with scientific facts and evidence that primate research is unnecessary, and with the support of anti-vivisection scientist's group Antidote Europe, the record is sure to create debate and controversy.

Supported by a host of organisations including the National Anti-Vivisection Society, Animal Aid, Animal Defenders International and many more, this project has unified support throughout the UK to highlight the use of primates in horrific experiments involved in medical research.

This single release comes hot on the heels of the recent High Court ruling whereby the Government was found guilty of acting unlawfully in licensing invasive brain experiments on Marmosets as ‘moderate’ rather than ‘severe’ suffering, thereby misleading the public in the extent of the levels of animal suffering in UK laboratories ‘Monkey in a Cage’ will also highlight the current efforts of a Written Declaration currently proceeding through the European Parliament, a political initiative which already has 296 MEPs supporting. Another 100 are needed to ensure legislation to ban experiments on primates in Europe.'

Last Thursday found me squeezed into a tiny cage with animal welfare campaigner Meg Mathews and chanteuse Maria Daines, who wrote "Monkey in a Cage", the fantastic song that's top of the indie charts and is storming up the main charts. We were raising awareness for Primate Day on 1 September. Horrifically, monkeys and apes are still used in animal experiments despite doctors, scientists, researchers and 200 worldwide welfare groups supporting a ban. [...]'
