Great pics everyone. It seems like we're eating well.

Aradia, I think you could. As for the crust. I used a boxed brand that had no animal ingredients. Most of them use lard.

You're all making me hungry!

Here are my contributions to our Superbowl party yesterday. I made a Giants cookie cake. Baked the chocolate chip cookies from VWAV on a pizza pan. It was going perfectly until a blob of frosting fell from the top of the pastry bag and ruined my N! Ah well, it still got oohs and aahs and was eaten happily.

And a pretty veggie tray, so we could have something remotely healthy too. With dilly ranch.

Pav - My mum grows all sorts of random stuff in like this massive inside greenhouse thing so we can have berries and stuff all year around. She's gonna do my garden for me this year and teach me how to grow veg and fruit. I'm so happy my mum is retired and has time for this kinda stuff. She worked all the time while I was growing up :(

This may not look "good" but trust me. It is. It's a pasty pie. (lazy man's version of a pasty) It's made with gimme lean fake ground beef, onions, potatoes, seasonings and some vegan brown gravy all cooked in a pie crust. I eat it smothered in brown gravy. The next day, when it's cold, I eat it smothered in ketchup.

Phwor! That looks good! Bet it'd taste nice with a bit of creamed corn on the side ;):D

Jambox - what sort of vegan icing did you use for your cake? It looks like the texture I've always preferred (the thicker, not whip-creamy kind) and I've been looking for a good icing to use on a chocolate cake.

Cup o Tea - yes that's the one! I love their whole range of faux meats :) They're quite expensive though, so I only buy them when they're on sale.
Yeah, me too. Great flavours, but just a once in awhile treat.

In honor of Mardi Gras...10-grain pancakes with walnuts, warm sliced banana, pure Canadian Maple Syrup and veggie sausages. (I've always been horrible at making nice-looking pancakes, but at least they taste good!)

Yes, although I'm not a Christian - I just like pancakes and was raised in a predominantly Christian community/school.

Muahaha, anything for a carbfest!

ah! I also never really knew what Mardi Gras was, though I know Pancake day :)

The article totally misses out on the German carnival which is based around all the same stuff.

I'm pretty sure Mardi Gras is about parades and drinking and flashing and beads and not so much Christianity anymore :)

It's the buttercream frosting from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World. It's just shortening, margarine, powdered sugar, vanilla, "milk", and food coloring for the colored parts. You just have to beat it until you can't stand it anymore, I think that's the key to fluffiness.

+1. Lot's of partying, parades, music in the streets, and general debauchery.

I'd guess for about 95% of us US folks it has nothing to do with religion. It's been even more secularized than Christmas. Most of the US does absolutely nothing on that day actually, but for parts of the US, notably New Orleans (among other things the birthplace of Jazz), it's the biggest thing of the whole year, easily eclipsing things like Christmas or our national holiday called Thanksgiving.

Jamboxrock, what shortening do you use?

How did you make that?

Pretty quick and easy. I used a packaged pastry crust that I only had to mix with water to form the dough. I made a top and bottom crust for a 10 inch pie plate. In a bowl, I mixed a package of Gimme lean fake ground beef, some frozen diced potatoes, some finely diced onions, a little salt and about a cup of vegan brown gravy. (just enough to keep it moist) I dumped it all onto the bottom crust. Topped it with the upper crust and baked it for about an hour at 350. Serve with more gravy on top.

Not an official recipe, but rather a lazy take on the individual meat/potato pasties that are popular where I grew up.
