Hi!

My partner is going on holiday to the New Forest in a few weeks with her daughter (daughter isn't vegan but will try anything food-wise). Please could anybody recommend vegan or vegan-friendly places to eat, and any exciting and interesting shops to visit?

Cheers!

Hi Pusskin - whereabouts are you heading to? There's a veggie restaurant in Boscombe which is supposed to be good - think it's this one: http://www.geocities.com/vegetarian_restaurant/

Salisbury has your usual mix of Italian places who can do pizza without the cheese, plus lots of Chinese/Indian/Thai restaurants which will often accomodate (The Rai D'Or is a pub with Thai restaurant, and they'll make anything on the veggie menu vegan friendly). There's also a great health food shop here in Salisbury in the main Market Square who do lots of sandwiches, pasties etc etc if you're doing picnics.

Thank you, Ruby Rose. They'll be staying near Beaulieu (sp?), so quite far down South I think. The veggie restaurant in Boscombe looks fab!

Might be worth asking Sluggie about some of the Southampton area places - she's checked a few out recently.

My ears are burning. :D

There are three veggie cafes in Southampton:

The Soul Bowl Cafe - http://www.soul-cellar.com/Soul%20Bowl.html - it's a jazz/reggae/blues club by evening and a licensed cafe by day. Food is cheap, stodgy and plentiful.

The Allsorts Psychic Cafe - http://www.allsorts-psychic-cafe.com/index.htm - very friendly little cafe, only two tables, good food.

The Arthouse - http://www.thearthousesouthampton.co.uk/ - a chic little cafe cum art gallery. They only did cakes and pasties last time I went, but they were in the process of developing a menu.

Ooooh! Thank you very much, Sluggie! We love the Soul Bowl website! Wish I was going that way, too. My partner reckons she could make a couple of nice days/evenings out at Southampton, so your recommendations will be handy places to stop at.

You're welcome. Those cafes aren't always open in the evening though, so she'll need to check first. There is also an oriental restaurant called Bamboos that's good for vegans. They do mock duck or tofu with whatever sauce you fancy off the main menu, and the waiters can tell you whether the sauce is suitable or not.
