I do use my microwave a lot, as it's a lot cheaper to run than a conventional oven, 3 baked spuds c. 1000w including turntable etc for 12 mins vs an oven that takes 10 mins to heat up and uses 1500w and then cooking for 30 - 45 mins. I don't rely on it but they are awfully useful especially when they're combi pnes that keep the outside crispy etc.
The rest of my food is generally either raw, stir fried (more economical than many other cooking methods including for the most part steaming) or is something like a hotpot or stew that I slow cook overnight on the cheep tarrif.
I also use the micro to freshen cheap bread they practically give away at the end of the day at co-op, makes it pretty much like new and yummy and moist.

There are plenty of vegan friendly convenience foods of the microwavable variety... they're also rather pricy .. running an average of $3+ a box. So, yeh they're out there.

I guess I should list a few... kind of forgot... Amy's makes a few that are vegan friendly

OMG I was in Whole Foods last night and Amy's had microwaveable bowls of hot cereal for the same price:rolleyes: What? You don't have to stir?

Funny, Haniska!

Next thing you know they'll be selling frozen microwaveable hot tea.

There is a brand new, just released, Amy's VEGAN pot pie! (http://www.amys.com/products/product_view.php?id=26) It is awesome! It works well to cook it using both the microwave (3.5 to 4 minutes just to thaw) and then oven bake at 350F for 15-17 minutes, as it states on the box. This saves a lot of time compared to just baking it yet it wont be soggy as if just nuked. It has whatever herb or spice I associate with pot pies from my youth and I give it a ****/5* rating. Yummers.

No whey, no way.
No honey, honey.

Once in a blue moon I'll melt butter over the popcorn after it's been popped, but it's usually salt and nothing else.

you don't really mean that do you?

All I do is just put dry kernels in a pan, nothing else. Once in a blue moon I'll melt butter over the popcorn after it's been popped, but it's usually salt and nothing else.

I tried this last night and I have to say I wasn't very impressed, it took much longer than usual for the kernels to start popping and when they did they didn't inflate as much as when they are heated in oil (and alot of the kernels didn't pop at all).

Hmmm... I hadn't considered nutrient degradation. I thought those people who reject microwaves did so because they're paranoid about radiation leakage. Interesting thread.

I threw my microwave out the other day I haven't used it for months. and after reading enough articles about how bad it is I couldn't handle having one in the house.
My housemates weren't very impressed as they seem to depend on it.
Its for their own good. :)

Did you donate it or just throw it out? Maybe you should have asked your roommates first though... :(

I'm not a big fan of microwaves, just because they take up a lot of space, and don't seem to do much that a stove and oven won't. And it is difficult to judge how long to cook things for, and I find that they almost always come out tasting worse.

Can be useful for heating stuff up at work, though.

I couldn't help but feel alarmed when I saw Microwave ovens (http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=203)

on the Vegan Forum message board page! :D

The two just don't seem to go together! ;)

About microwave ovens............I don't use mine for cooking just for heating things up in a hurry or defrosting stuff. :)
