Cure the Ageing Misery

A DIET packed with soya could be the key to beating the misery of the menopause. That's according to nutritionist Lee Jerome, who claims food containing the plant extract can help with uncomfortable symptoms including mood swings, loss of sex drive andhot flushes.

Dr Jerome of the Vegetarian and Vegan Society believes women may be able to alleviate some of the misery of the menopause by changing their diet.

'Menopausal symptoms are seen as almost inevitable in the west,' she said.

'Yet most women in Japan and the Far East rarely experience them. The answer may well lie in what they eat - a diet mainly based on plant foods which includes plant hormones called phytoestrogens.'

Foods with phytoestrogens - chemicals that mimic the body's own hormone, oestrogen - are vital because natural oestrogen levels begin to decline from the moment the menopause begins.

Phytoestrogen - which is present in soya, celery, fennel, liquorice, rhubarb and ginseng - helps restore the balance.

Scientific studies have found women have fewer hot flushes when they eat more soya. You don't need to buy masses either.

One study found that 45g of soya flour a day reduced hot flushes by 40 per cent.

Phytoestrogen can also reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Swapping cow's milk for soya milk can also help as dairy products contain casein, which isn't easily absorbed by the body.

If it lies undigested in the gut, it may produce toxins and mucus which prevent the absorption of nutrients.

The chances of getting osteoporosis also increase with the menopause.

Dr Jerome recommends cutting out meat altogether to keep bones healthy.

She said: 'Meat dramatically reduces the amount of oestrogen produced and can increase the risk of osteoporosis by causing calcium loss.'

There is also a strong link between animal fat, cholesterol and onset of the menopause.

Not really news is it ?
