I gave up Green and Blacks because they got bought out by Cadburys.
Cadburys is in partnership with Schweppes, which is owned by Coca Cola, so every time you buy Green and Blacks you're giving Coca Cola money.
Sounds complicated but I don't think it is!
And with Gap- I did hear that they had been given the kick up the arse they needed, but I still don't think I could ever buy anything there- I haven't shopped there for years and years. Ever since I studied it as part of GCSE English exams.
Plus it's pretty expensive!

its the certain product (namely non-fair trade and decaffinated ((non-organic)) coffee), not the actually coffee houses that you should boycott!

at my coffee shop we serve 2/3 fair trade coffee!

and the only reason its not 100% is cause some people are turned off by it (the whole being scared of what you dont know)

I've quite a few companies on my boycott list. Some don't sell any vegan products anyway, some sell many. I don't beleive it's practical to boycott some companies which sell tens of thousands of products (such as supermarkets) of which I have a problem with a handful that i'd never buy anyway. This list isn't comprehensive, you can assume the usual suspects (McD, KFC etc) are there already :)

Proctor and Gamble, Glaxo/Smithkline/Beecham, Unilever - vivisection
Gap, Nestle, Nike and most sports companies - HR abuses

I've also been boycotting Hovis (and their subsideries like Easy Organic) for 7 years since I heard about Rank's links with the arms trade. However I can no longer find any info about it online, I heard originally from quite a respectable source, but am thinking of removing it from my list.

There's some companies which I actively don't boycott their vegan products, because they've made significant advances in the right direction in recent years and will only stop doing so if people boycott them. Green and blacks is on this list, despite being bought by Cadbury they've still carried on their same ethics.

Isn't it ironic that the biggest corporations, with the biggest profits, are able to donate substantial money to ethical projects/organisations etc. Just look at 'coca-cola' who donated in excess of 1million dollars to the recent american disasters! This is just 'PR' on a multi-billion dollar corporate scale. It disgusts me to be honest! Off-setting share holder profits with individual lives for the sake of immediate PR and future revenue! What is the world coming too? :mad:

We now buy ALL our toiletries and household goods from the co-op (co-op own brand) they sell everything you could possibly need. We have a big co-op a few miles away in Peacehaven and a small local one in our home town Seaford. All their own brand products are BUAV approved and they even have BUAV approved dental floss etc, toilet cleaner, washing up liquid, face cream, bubble bath etc etc.
They are really cheap as well so we are not breaking the bank all the time.
We have now boycotted Asda due to their Walmart connections.

BUAV - becareful as not all of their products are vegan!

I was shocked to learn this so I emaild them and they told me that - to be able to provide a full range they had quite a few products that contained animal ingredients.

This was about 3 months ago.

Do email them yourself to confirm this

Thanks Gibby! The Co-op products all clearly state on the packaging whether or not they contain animal products or nay. It usually says, this product is not tested on animals and contains no animal ingredients!

No it's not just you Tigerlily :) I went vegan almost 5 years ago, and I thought, or wanted to think, I'd had a fully vegan lifestyle. I've recently realised I have a lot of improving to do, and you're right, it's totally overwhelming. It doesn't help that the most evil companies seem to be the ones that take over a whole load of other companies, so you have to be aware of all the offshoots as well.

Yeah, I find it especially hard living at home. My mom buys all the dish washing stuff, laundry stuff, paper towels, toilet paper, house cleaners, majority of the groceries....I can't force her to buy other brands. She's unemployed and has to buy what's cheapest for the family. :(

When I move out on my own in a much bigger city, I think it will be easier. :)

Absolutely, and at least you know the sorts of things that you'd rather buy when you do get your own place. It was living by myself again that jolted me into vegan action regarding cleaners, laundry stuff etc etc.

I'm going to have a good read of this thread though and see what else can be done :D

No it's not just you - I am recently vegan and finding some aspects challenging to figure out - Saturday was a good example - I went to lunch with some friends - we had chosen a place to eat before hand, so I did some research to figure out what was safe to eat - then someone changed their mind at the last minute and I just had to guess the best I could.
We went shopping afterwards it a huge shoe outlet - I couldn't find a thing that was appropriate for me to buy - either they were leather or they were made in China - I won't buy things produced there.
I'm not complaining - just saying the decision is wider reaching than I had imagined and impacts all areas of my life - but I guess that's the point of being vegan anyway, right?

Well, I guess. But sometimes I don't want to not buy from Walmart or I don't want to not buy made in China clothing. This going to sound selfish maybe, but I don't feel an "emotional reason" for me to stop buying those things. I feel like I have to. Like I'm a bad or fake vegan if I don't. I just don't like that feeling. I don't like mentioning about something I like/bought and have someone make a reply after me why Kraft is evil, for example, and imply that I'm a "bad vegan" for buying them.

Right now, honestly, I'm content with buying simply vegan products. Fretting over fair trade, organic, union made, independently made, etc, etc is just way to much for me, especially since I really don't care about all that. :o
