While the UK has been enduring storms, in South Australia there have been bushfires. Nine people died, and 30,000 animals. Last night on the news we could see the animals being dropped into pits, just as we did when the UK had foot & mouth disease. I got into a discussion at the gym today about the fact that nobody seems to care about the animals, and we went on to veganism. Actually it was a useful discussion, until someone said how it is ok to eat animals if you say a prayer for them! Yeah, right.

It's the time of year. In the part of Queensland where I live, there hasn't been any useful rain for ages, so it can be perilous if a fire starts. Sometimes arsonists start fires that get out of hand. At the moment in South Australia where those bushfires have been raging, last night's news was that the fires are under control, and investigations are under way to work out how they started. The bush is tinder dry, but one careless cigarette smoker driving a car and throwing out the stub, can set off the fires. And yes, bushfires really do occur on a regular basis.
