Can anyone suggest a good Indian/Asian dessert? I'm cooking for an omni friend on Friday, and I really can't think what to make. I'd rather avoid anything with a lot of rice in it as we are having rice with the main meal.

At the moment, I've got as far as coming up with MrFlibbles' Jaggery Dosa, (http://lustrousmusings.blogspot.com/2010/02/jaggery-dosa.html) but I'd welcome more suggestions.

Thanks :)

I'm not the world's biggest fan of indian desserts - most I've tried have resolved around pastry saturated in sugar syrup.

There are veganisable halva recipes around (such as carrot), but it's not my cup of tea.

Something that does work very well and we have every now and then is lychees, pineapple, coconut cream, vanilla icecream and jaggery crystals (this recipe comes from the back of jaggery sold in Waitrose). Pineapple is south american, but the rest are indianish. Jaggery works really well with it because it neither disolves in nor cracks your teeth.

AFAIK traditional Indian desserts often use a lot of cow's milk, and are also too sugary for my taste. From my lacto-veg days, I still remember kulfi and kheer as some of my favorite desserts ever, and there are several veganized kheer recipes out there.

Here are some:

But you want something without rice... maybe have a look here then:http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj96may/vjindian.htm

At least one of the links (http://sharan-india.org/vegan-recipes/desserts/) Manish (indianvegan) posted also contain a lot of vegan indian dessert recipes.

Mmm, Indian rice pudding is delicious....but I've just seen you don't want anything with rice, in which case IndianVegan's raw halva also looks jolly nice.

If you can get ripe mangos, mango with sorbet or vegan icecream can round off a meal nicely.
