Nyang is nearly 4 years old and was dumped in the bush here on the Gold Coast some time ago. He arrived at my house very tired and hungry. He's now plump, very loving, affectionate and playful. He's been fixed and had a health check - no AIDS etc.

He doesn't get on with other animals so he needs to be in a solo pet home and kept indoors.

Nyang is very grateful for anything you put down for him to eat, is very interactive with humans, intelligent and obeys commands to the best of his ability.

He would make a great companion for the right person. He is very lovable. Please give him a chance.

I could take him but I already have a cat. :(

Then I have no choice but to put him to death. If I get no more replies - even for a foster home - he will be off to the pound Monday 31 January. That's just over 24hrs. I cannot put my cats at risk because he attacks them.
Sad, that this backward country has no no-kill shelters for caring people to find homes for animals.

Surely the Animal Welfare League could take him for a while? I'd be willing to pay the costs.

Thanks Geoff, he's already been there and because he won't socialise with the other cats in the communal area, he's "not adoptable." There are too many other animals much easier to adopt who have to be put down so why should he get priority is what I have been told.

I offered to build a large cage inside the communal area so he could get used to the other cats (which is what works in the US) but they said they don't have room.

Thanks for your offer - I think it's free to surrender an animal anyway, besides the request for a donation.

I just rang AWL (Amanda) and they said that being aggressive to other cats wouldn't be a problem! I hope they're not turning into the RSPCA!
You could try talking to Maureen at VVSQ on (07) 3300 9320 as she may be able to advise. She also knows people at AWL.

Hi Geoff,
I don't understand why the people at AWL always give this spiel. They give the impression that they are almost a no-kill shelter. It is just not true. I know people on the inside at the top who have told me that if he cannot be in the communal area they will put him in a cage but if they run out of cages (such as when they have a surplus of animals or too many sick animals and this doesn't take long to happen) there is no longer any room and he is put down. He has already been through all this.

Maureen has already kindly advertised this cat in her newsletter but we got no response. AWL also ran a full-page article I wrote about him last year without any results too.

I just don't know what else to do .... that's why I'm putting it out on this group as a last ditch effort.

SeaPrincess, you are such a kind person :) I wish I could take the cat for you, but Odi and the cat would murder each other :( . Good luck, and I hope that Geoff's advice is useful for you

Dear Banana

I have honestly tried my best - for 10 months! there have been 5 attacks on my cats, the last one on my elderly diabetic cat who doesn't even chase birds he is so harmless. This is not acceptable!

Each time I grab him off my cats so there is no damage to them then he bites me (which is normal - even my cats would do that). It takes my hand 36hrs to return to normal. I can't even chop veges for dinner or wash up. Cat bites are very painful and can end you up in hospital with infections.

In addition to that, I have run up and down the stairs sometimes 6-10 times a day taking him food, water, cleaning his litter box, putting a fan/heater on, playing with him, giving him flower essences (in the hope it will mellow him), turning the light off at night. He has had his own special room with a fabulous view of the rainforest. He has been treated like a king. I couldn't have done more. Then spent a lot of time putting fliers up in supermarkets, vets, wherever I saw a noticeboard. No luck.

It will break my heart to do it. Isn't there someone out there who can take him?

No cat is unadoptable. My current cat Melly was an "unadoptable". I live in Wollongong, I don't know how you could get him down here.... I wouldn't mind taking him... I'm just not sure how it can be done.
