In today's culinary world of gluten intolerance, raw foodists and locavores, vegan eating has wandered far from its hippie roots, leaping off the back of a VW bus and onto dinner tables nationwide.

Many people still assume, though, that vegan dietary restrictions mean a boring diet. Ann Gentry in her new cookbook "Vegan Family Meals: Real Food for Everyone" [Andrews McMeel Publishing, June 2011; 272 pages; $25] goes far afield to showcase the wide variety of food that can fit in a vegan diet. Gentry will share the culinary possibilities in her new cookbook in an appearance at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

A mother of two, Hollywood chef and the founder of Real Food Daily, a chic vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, Gentry clearly knows how to prepare vegan food that kids and real people love to eat. "Vegan Family Meals" features fresh incarnations of tasty classics as well as recipes inspired by cultures around the world.

I saw this in Waterstones a few days ago - it looks really good but I haven't been paid this month yet - I've added it to my Amazon wish list and will hopefully add it to my collection soon.

Please let us know how you like it; which recipes you tried and what you thought of them!
I'm a vegan cookbook addict and even though I have yet to really cook from all of the ones I have, I'm always on the lookout for more!
