View Full Version : Seaweed for iodine

Anyone know which UK shops sell a form of seaweed that is palatable cooked or raw?
I'm keen to ensure vegan kids have enough iodine. I can get mind from mulivit tabs but kids don't have iodine in theirs. non-vegan veggie kids and adults get iodine from milk and milk products but only when iodine is used to clean the metal vats. I suppose the lack of iodine isn't too serious or more of us would suffer from thyroid probs.

Observations and help please?

Geoff

Hi Geoff
I think it would probably be best to move to a multivitamin that contains Iodine which provides a consistent amount rather than relying on seaweed (Mr. Tumee (http://www.shopvegan.co.uk/products.asp?Section=1050) has Iodine in). This is a thread (http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?2446-iodine) which discusses Iodine, it importance and some of the ways to get it. Hope thats of some help!:-)

i order dried seaweed from goodnessdirect website and sprinkle it into soups and stews etc (cause it doesn't taste very nice) but you only need a tiny amount to get your daily iodine requirement.

Actually I quite like it, particularly that Clearspring "sea salad", which you can eat straight from the packet :o I assume you can still get that, haven't had any for a while?

Firestorm is probably right that an accurate dose of iodine is better though.

Mr Tumee.........I love it!
I'm going to get some of these for myself as I hate taking adult calcium tablets. Is there iodine in all the tablets Firestorm or in one in particular? :)

There is only Iodine in the Multivitamins but I would not recommend these for adults. The RDA of Iodine for an adult is 150µg, but 2 of the Mr Tumee only contains 38µg (probably enough for a child but not for an adult), to get your RDA you would need to take 8 a day and they cost £7.50 for 60!

With regards to Geoff - I take the Vegan Societies Veg 1 multivitamin and it states on the side that you can cut one in half for children who are 2-12 years old, maybe you could try that?

Thanks Firestorm, I think I'd still take the children's tablets though as I don't think I am getting ANY iodine in my diet at the moment. I don't like taking the big kelp tablets I have and I hate the taste of seaweed so at least I'd be getting some iodine.
Plus, because of a medical condition I'm told to take extra calcium and vit D............I don't like taking adult size tablets so I'd rather take the chewable children's one and get at least some of these vitamins etc.

I think I'll order some Mr Tumee's this week, thanks for telling us about them Firestorm. :) xxx

p.s. I have to do everything in childlike proportions........I had to have a blood test done yesterday and the nurse said my veins were so tiny she had to use a syringe they normally use for babies! :undecided:

I get those Kelp tablets from Holland and Barrett but they are quite big and they smell funny so it sort of puts me off taking them. :(
