Any chance anyone knows a recipe for anything that tastes remotely like the proper stuff? Don't know why but I've just had a bit of a craving for a fish buttie recently, only time I have since vegetarian, let alone vegan.

The only stuff I've found that wasn't using halloumi was by soaking tofu in malt vinegar. It tasted nothing like though.

I find that Viana Real smoked tofu tastes a bit like fish? I have a book called Vegan Seafood (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vegan-Seafood-Nancy-Berkoff/dp/0931411319/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322468976&sr=8-1) I will scan it when I get home to see if there is anything suitable, other than that you could try tracking these guys down: http://www.something-fishy.org.uk/

Marinating tofu in kelp, wrapping it in seaweed, battering it, then deep-frying it?

I've never tried it but I'm pretty sure I've seen this method mentioned on this forum a few times.

I've made it before, slices of tofu with a piece of nori for flavouring, battering and deep frying. With some home made tartare sauce it was very nice :)

Here's my effort (not the prettiest thing in the world but gives you an idea what I'm talking about) - http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?28463-Pictures-of-good-vegan-food-you-ve-eaten!-(2)&p=678369&viewfull=1#post678369

Oooh yeah, I managed to grab a giant plate of 'fish', chips and mushy peas at the West Mids Festival this year.

Not a recipe but Holland & Barret do vegan fish fingers. They tasted pretty similar to what the real ones are like, as far as I can remember!
