Nicola - what do brussel sprouts taste like exactly? I've never tried them and I get mixed answers when I ask if they're good or not...

Brussel sprouts are one of those classic foods you hate when you're a kid but develop a taste for when you're older. I love them - try them drizzled with a peanut butter/soy sauce/lemon juice sauce and maybe some toasted seeds - mmmmm!! Also don't overcook them, that makes them really nasty and soggy.

I was never fed brussels sprouts as a kid, but I loooooooove them now. Absolute favorite way to prepare them is to roast with some olive oil, salt, and pepper for 30 to 40 minutes. They char a little and get a bit crunchy and are so good. To me the taste is just kinda like a green veggie, like baby cabbages. If you like broccoli and cabbage you'll probably like brussels sprouts. If I don't have time to roast them, I cook them in the microwave for a couple minutes then sprinkle on cajun seasoning.

today:

breakfast: vanilla almond shredded oats w/ soy milk

snack: banana

lunch: scrambled tofu w/ shiitake mushrooms & spinach, two pumpkin pancakes w/ maple syrup

snack: two kiwis, bbq soy jerky

dinner: salad (romaine, spinach, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, celery, green peppers, radishes, alfalfa sprouts, mixed beans, creamy herb dressing, and bacos), roasted broccoli

later: either a pumpkin pie milkshake or pumpkin raisin cookies. probably the milkshake :)

I was supposed to start eating healthily again today after a week of barely eating at all. The day started out ok, but I've lost my appetite again.

2 cups of coffee with Silk creamer.

9 pieces veggie sushi.

1 pita bread with hummus.

a few peanuts (from the shell).

Not hungry now.....might eat something else when I come home from Yoga.

Aww, you really have to try them! I love them!
Didn't used to when I was younger, but now they're my fav part of my meal :D
I think becoming vegan also helps to develop an appreciation for less processed foods- i've found myself liking vegetables (and even some fruits :o) that I didn't like before.
I just steam mine- they have a really good texture too. You should try them- 'tis the season etc etc.

fiamma, i make my gravy from scratch.

my yorkshire pudding recipe is in here:

http://veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3434&highlight=yorkshire+pudding

and my vegan gravy recipe is:

Vegan gravy recipe:

1 vegetable bouilion cube
2 cups water
half teaspoon onion powder
few good dashes garlic powder
a little sea salt and pepper
couple tablespoons full of nutritional yeast
few good dashes of tamari soy sauce (or normal soy sauce, just add until it tastes right)
a little squirt of mustard
about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of brown rice flour
tablespoon of vegan butter

combine all ingredients in pot, whisk while bringing it to a boil. cook on medium low heat until done.

i didnt have nutritional yeast though so i tried it without and it still worked fine, it just needed more onion powder and soy sauce than originally.

Haha, excellent. I bought a big can of pumpkin last week and I'm trying to think of ways to use it up. For the milkshake I used a third of a pint of Soy Delicious vanilla ice cream, two big spoonfulls of pumpkin, just a little soy milk (the pumpkin makes it creamy already), shakes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Blended it up, then crumbled one sheet of graham crackers into it. Oh, and I added a bit of maple syrup to sweeten it up.

 THANKS so much! The gravy recipe I've been using is full of vegan margarine (too fatty and too expensive to make every time I want gravy) and has mushrooms, which I'm not too fond of (I like my gravies smooth). :D

*sings "I'm having mashed potatoes and gravy tomorrow! Doo doo! La la!"*

Bleh, I hate that, Cherry! I was making garlic bread once and I "double dipped" my butter knife into my margarine container. The knife has some garlic bits on it and the rest of my margarine tasted like garlic! Argh. I could only use it for savoury things after that. :(

Made myself a lovely simple stir fry for dinner tonight. I love being able to cook what I want when I like, and then putting a couple of logs on the fire and some great music on the stereo... bliss..I am a lucky B...

Yeh, I thought it must have been that, but on closer inspection it seems I left the open bread packet on top of half a bulb of garlic! Oops. Didn't think it was QUITE that strong!
