Hi Emma ... everyone talks about medjool dates .. they sound like the fresh dates i buy from the greengrocer here in Sydney. They are sold loose by the kilo .. soft and sweet and yummy (not like those dried ones in the packet that you use for cooking) .. are these the same do you think? Banana would know as she's from Australia .. does she still post? Thanks
Yeah! They're the really big plump sticky ones..not a patch really on any other variety I've seen.
The only place I've seen them so far is in Sainsbury's..£1.99 for 9, a little less for the organic ones..Can't imagine how much they'd cost for a kilo worth? lots!
I don't know about Banana posting, I'm new here as it goes. :)
Foodwise today I've had:
a juiced pineapple with oatgerm on top, shared with my youngest daughter
apple..banana..
red peppers..avocado..brazil nuts..tomatoes..salad leaves
few corn crackers..(more) date flapjack *ahem*
raw spinach leaves..stir fried carrots..spring onions..red pepper..mushrooms and marinated tofu with ginger and tamari all piled on top.

I am also having some "festivals" because my coworker is going to the Jamaican restaurant across the street. They're little fried sticks of corn dough, sweet kind of like a muffin. So good.

Hi Mark and welcome :) What is swiss steak style tofu? I'm imagining it to be tofu with mushrooms and vegan cheese - but then again, I've no idea lol!!
Today:
2 cups of coffee with Silk creamer.
1 blueberry bagel with Tofutti cream cheese and Raspberry & Champagne Jam.
1 six inch veggie sub on italian with sweet onion sauce.
25g of BBQ soy crisps.
Home-made burrito: stirfried Yves veggie ground "chicken", garlic, onions, red pepper - all stuffed into a roma tomato tortilla with some vegan cheese. Baked in the oven for a few minutes and topped with some organic miso ginger dressing.
Big mound of mashed sweet potato on the side (put some cinnamon and nutmeg in the potato too Mmmmmm).
Cup of cinnamon spice tea.
2 cookies.

Well I think it's intended to taste like steak. It doesn't particularly, although it is quite 'meaty'. It's basically defrosted firm tofu marinated in water with yeast extract dissolved into it, coated in flour with herbs then lightly fried. You then cook up some vegetables with the marinade and add some flour to thicken it up, before pouring the vegtable mixture over the tofu in a casserole dish and baking it for 30 minutes. It comes out quite thick and creamy, very nice.
I got the recipe from Easy Vegan Cooking by Leah Leneman, although it's quite an advanced recipe by the standards of the book.

The sandwich filled me up for hours! I had my lunch around 2...I wasn't hungry again until 7 or something. I normally hungry 1-2 hours after every meal, usually. I guess high protein foods early in the day do prevent late night munching.

Home made bread with seeds, cabbage, carrot, watercress and bean soup. packet of crisps as a weekend treat (trying to phase them out).
We're having baked potato with mushrooms, onions, garlic and home made spicy sauce later.
Every Sunday we go to the local farm shop and buy a large box of veg (different ones if possible each time) and make sure we eat the lot during the week.
I always think that variety is the key to staying healthy:)
