Bayer CropScience is a step closer to growing genetically modified mustard seed in Australia for the first time. The company has applied for a licence to conduct open field trials in 17 shires across western Victoria, central New South Wales and South Australia. The crop would be used as an alternative to canola oil.

The application is now open to public comment, although Gene Technology Regulator Sue Meek says it is at a very early stage.

"They've got this line of Indian mustard they've modified and they basically want to trial it for the first time and compare its agronomic performance with conventional Indian mustard and also with conventional and GM canola.
