Although I don't particularly like the opinion of the article, which states there should be an effort to put MORE meat into pies, I thought it was interesting nonetheless. Apparently most brands of meat pie contain more tvp than actual meat!

Meat Pies (http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=103115&catId=100406&tid=100008&p=1)

...If you're thinking steak when you think meat pie, forget it. The definition of meat includes - apart from cattle - buffalo, camel, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit or sheep (as long as they're not slaughtered in the wild). Some other animals are included on a state-by-state basis. But what might really surprise you is that the only part of an animal that's not included in the definition is a foetus. Though offal is included, it has to be shown separately in an ingredients list.

So, basically, anything goes, including fat, gristle, trimmings and meat scraps removed from bones. There's no guarantee of what most of us probably think of as meat - muscle flesh. Only four of the pies tested named the type of meat in the ingredients list - two beef, one beef mince and one a mix of mutton and beef. All the others just listed 'meat'....

*GAG*!!

the last paragraph in the article had an interesting sentence "the manufacturers ......were understandably concerned about the results"

- why?? they knew what was in or rather not in their pies and the nutritional content of them!
