why do we need it? what does it do for your body?

But if you are in a hurry it prevents heart disease, blindness, nervous system crashing out and many more things.

B12 protects the nervous system. Like folate, it protects against birth defects. In extreme cases, it can cause blindness and deafness. It can cause dementia. Lack of B12 can cause fatigue, and tingling in the hands or feet, among other things.

There is a link between low B12 levels and high homocysteine (http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108&highlight=homocysteine) levels, which again are associated with various diseases. Increased B12 intake means lower homocysteine levels (but see the homocysteine thread to read about what people disagree in).

We have a new thread here (http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4075)meant to contain info about what B12 deficiency can result in, but it's only one post there so far.
