i love trail mix. it keeps me going.

my newest mix is

almonds (my favorite)
cashews
sesame sticks
vegan dark chocolate covered almonds
sunflower seeds

i need a dehydrated fruit in there but i hate raisins- going to buy a dehydrater on ebay- they are super cheap around $15

Lately I've been snacking on a ton of trail mix -- quite a bit dried fruit, such as bananas, cranberries, apples, mango, pineapple, papaya (and occassionally raisins.. but yes, just leave them out.. sometimes I do too) and then walnuts, cashews, almonds and carob chips... I just love it so much, yum! I mix up a bunch at a time and then just carry it around with me all the time in case I get hungry and need a snack and there really isn't anything vegan around.. you really can do anything with trail mix.. have fun!

The thing to watch out for about pre-dried banana chips, is that sometimes they are sweetened with honey without any labelling (especially if you're getting them bulk).

I personally like: almonds, peanuts, RAISINS, shredded coconut, and salted sunflower seeds (gives it a nice sweet and salty taste).

If you can get craisins where you are - they would be nice added in to a trail mix.

Great!!! Let's see more of it

get rid of those peanuts thought they ain't no good for you. They're legumes not nuts, you can boil em then they're OK, they do that in QLD though you know.

Even raw peanuts?

Honestly - you won't have to push too hard as I don't actually like them that much - I just add them for variety and have a (vegan-curious) friend that likes them so they now make up the mix :).

How does boiling them make a difference?

Because they are legumes they contain inhibitors that prevent them from growing. The availability of the nutrients is inhibited till they get moist. When you soak em, the inhibitors dissolve releasing the nutrients for use in growing. If you eat em raw the inhibitors can inhibit the uptake of any nutrients your digesting. Also the are frequently contaminated witha carcinogenic mold called aflatoxin andPeanuts are one of the most pesticide-contaminated crops.

I don't have em as they are ultra acid causing and are bad for my eczema. Other than those things I guess you can enjoy them:)

Hmmmm I add them to my Birchir muesli and I soak that overnight so hopefully the active inhibitors are biodegraded by the time I come to munch 'em.

I might give them the flick however, but my peanut butter / paste is going to be a pain to leave out! It's filling my sandwiches for the next four days!

Tahini just isn't the same.

I wouldn't stop em if they aren't causing you no trouble.. I read that Aussie peanuts are less likley to have the mould on em. Someone else might like to speak on the issue.

My partner likes peanut butter on toast. I have taken to cashew butter , lovely.

Antony knut butter

Where the peanuts are grown makes a difference. For instance, here in the US, less mold is found on peanuts grown in the dry SW part of the country. More mold is found on the crops coming from the hot, humid SE states. AND peanut crops are rotated with cotton crops in the US so buying organic peanuts helps promote organic cotton, and vice-versa. :)

(I've heard suggestions that some people may have reactions to the pesticides/fungicides that come from the non-organic peanuts. Perhaps some peanut allergies are actually allergies to chemicals or mold. Remember that cotton is one of the most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops, and these chemicals stay in the soil for the following peanut crop.)

Just keep in mind that your dehydrated fruit probably won't be as moist and plump as the dehydrated fruit you buy in the store. They use sulphur to retain color and moisture. I tried dehydrated fruit with varying levels of sucess (mostly poor success) in the past with food dehydrators. I don't know if I over-dehydrated them or what. Perhaps you will have better luck. Try to get a dehydrator with the instructions on ebay (although you can probably find instructions on the internet or the company website).

it seems like a lot of dehydrated fruit around here has sugar, bet i could find some online. my only fear about buying a dehydrator on ebay is that it could have been used to dehydrate meat. i don't want my pineapple to taste like deer jerky- what ever that tastes like.

what exactly is a Pepita??? sounds tropical

if you click on the link in the other post (the link is the whole sentence) I made you will see a picture of them. I think the word must be spanish. I have read that Native Americans used them by grinding them into flour.

The Aztecs ate em so the word could come from them
