I was actually force-fed meat because I grew up in the 1960s when meat was supposed to "make blood."

That's so terrible!! I'm glad you got all that figured out and are sticking up for veganism now. :) Although, I think many of those that grew up in the 1960s and 1970s really have a hard time accepting vegetarianism and veganism, ie my parents... They both have said something about "making blood", have a hard time believing I can survive and won't just starve to death.

My mum was born in the 40's and my dad in the 50's and one went veggie when I was 6 and the other when I did, at 14. My mum also went vegan after I brought her Skinny Bitch for xmas. My Dad is pretty much vegan now too - just using up all the Quorn in the house. How great is that? It's taken me two years but now both my parents are pretty much vegan. I think it's more to do with how open minded your parents are than their age. I mean my mum gets a pension lol.
Also guys it's not just America where meat is centered around everything. It's just as bad here, although many more people have a choice to be veggie and it's ALOT more accepted. I've never heard that meat made blood before - how absurd!

Yeah, I agree. I lived in Colorado for 5 years, in America they have steak on the menu all day long, and like you say it gets very centered around meat but more and more veggie/vegan options are appearing all the time over there much like here.

When you look at traditional English cooking while it's not always as centered around meat, it is often laced with many animal products and animal bi-products (as we vegans know since we read the labels on everything!).

Yeah, Emzy, it's definitely about being open-minded, not your age. I'm in my 40s, which is considered middle-aged, but I still check out new things, new music, keep up with fashions, create, write songs ... I'm always trying something new and different.

My mom is only 64 and ready to give up on life. It's sad, I feel bad for her. But I did get her to try yoga for the first time, so she's not a hopeless case :)

Miss Bettie -- you're too cute! I'm surprised my younger mind didn't figure that one out ;)

I hate when people say stupid things like, "Well the cow would die anyways" that's like killing a child and saying "Well they'd die anyways! Who cares?" Ughhh.
Or when I told my family I wanted to go from vegetarian to vegan and my brother said, "Yeah, next she'll give up water and oxygen"
...
He's always full of those remarks.

... and probably full of doubt and self-hate (nothing against your brother). I don't get mad at comments like this anymore.

I do get mad Pavo but it's more like an inside anger. These days at work I just blow them away with FACTS and that's it. Although this one time I actually laughed at a guy right out loud - I didn't mean too! It just happened!

I get mad when I'm PMS-ing ... which is this week, so I'm glad I'll be going away for a few days beginning on Friday. It's just today and tomorrow that I'll have to deal with ignorance in the workplace.

Emzy, I laughed really loud at someone yesterday and it had nothing to do with veganism. It totally cracked me up that a religion reporter didn't know that parishoners get very loud in a Baptist church. *rolls eyes*

a lady came into my work about 6 weeks ago and i must've been in the sort of mood where i made a comment about dairy..(it's relatively easy to shove in the dairy industry into conversation :))..and jotted down the notmilk website link and suggested she go have a peek, not expecting that she would..cos you know people sometimes have that 'humour her' look about them.
she came in again today and i was chattering to her about it a little..i brought it up in conversation and i didn't get the impression she even wanted to talk about it she said yeah..she hadn't had had any milk since then..and wouldn't ever eat an egg again (yay - joy)..but then she spoilt it all by saying she still scoffed meat cos she loved it so much..and when i said if she wanted more info to come chat she did that fake joking stern 'no way' thing and walked away speedily  :(

My room mate just came home from the chocolate factory.

Until recently, I had always heard from people that being vegan/vegetarian was dangerous. When my parents got interested in health, and being healthy, I also got interested, and learned otherwise.

Yeah, whenever I tell someone I'm vegan, I usually get something along the lines of, "Yeah, I tried that once, but I got sick so I started eating meat again"

Oh, I hate..."The animal is going to die anyways!" That's like having a child, killing him when he's full grown and saying, "Oh, well he was going to die anyways!" Okay..maybe that was a bit crude but, you know.

we're all going to die anyways. I HATE that argument more than any other argument and it is used waaaay too often. Lets squish you into a crowded cage and make you fight for food and water until you're slaughtered. You're going to die eventually anyway. I'm pissed just thinking about it.

I hate the "you inadvertently kill bugs, etc., so you're not vegan, therefore you might as well eat meat" argument. I don't get it! Just because you can't avoid killing one thing (such as killing bugs when driving a car, etc.), then you should DELIBERATELY go and kill something else? I once hit a cat with my car (a very sad day :( ), but does that mean I should get a hatchet and go kill a bunch of other cats??? It makes no sense!

What if you are one of the unfortunate people to have run over a person by accident and killed them? Does that mean you should go on a mission to kill people by running them over?

Even when I was vegetarian I got a bit of grief at school for it, but, hey, chances are, I'm going to live longer and healthier than any of those people so, essentially, screw 'em.
Then again, it's only really the slightly more prickish people who tend to try and have a case against it, from what I've experienced anyway.

I would also use that viewpoint when meateaters say silly things like "I'm gonna eat 2 steaks for every steak you don't eat, so the same amount of animals will die whether you're vegan or not". I'd just tell them that if they eat twice the steaks, they'll die twice as fast, so it'll all even out :p
