Fiveqs -- Oh, I HATE those "can't you just pick it off" comments!

Did anyone ever have a piece of lettuce that was next to meat in a salad? The smell alone makes you want to puke!!

Another rant -- going to restaurants and saying "no cheese" on the salads. Of course they bring cheese. You send it back. It comes back with teeny little bits of cheese still on there ... and you KNOW they just scraped it off, and you didn't get fresh.

My new thing is saying I'm allergic to everything. The words "lawsuit" and "sue" scare everyone :)

I don't like using allergies, since I want people to recognize that veganism as an ethical choice is valid, but some restaurants are just thick enough that they don't listen to anything short of a lawsuit threat =-/

that was a concern for me too so I say both where I can

I strive to make veganism more mainstream and better understood so I prefer to explain it to people, if I am not comfortable with a place I won't eat there.

I don't like the idea of lying about it. I find the best thing to do is have a friendly word, if necessary ask if you can explain your requirements directly to the chef if the server doesn't seem like they understand.

although the truth is (blood type and other factors depending) that after a while it is likely that a severe intolerance is formed so it's not really lying. I do strive to make it more mainstream too but in many cases that law suit threat that they automatically feel on hearing the word allergy is what is needed to ensure standards, especially when I'm going to places with my omni friends that don't specifically cater for vegans in their advertising etc but when you discuss being vegan with them and maybe mention allergy then they tell you what food on the menu is or can be made vegan. I think saying "I'm vegan which means that I don't have... plus I have developed an allergy to ..." is a useful way of ensuring best practices and the more places that more often encounter this will make them more prepared in the future and hopefully understand the requirements of vegans better and automatically take the precautions that might not otherwise ave been taken, even listing specific things as vegan on the menus permenantly making veganism more mainstream.
But when I'm getting a tea at the station etc I admit as there is not as much time to explain I just say quickly "tea with soya not dairy please I'm vegan and allergic to dairy"

Luckily I'm well versed with all the dickheads in the restaurants in Luton...mainly because they are all my scummy mates who know they'll get a bunch of fives if they fuck with my food! :D

(NB most of my mates work minimum wage jobs and get pissed everyday. Oh how productive!)

I don't go anywhere else really!

omni friend: oh yeah I keep forgetting
omni friend's friend: does that mean you can't eat nuts?

I think saying "I'm vegan which means that I don't have... plus I have developed an allergy to ..." is a useful way of ensuring best practices and the more places

Fair enough, whatever works for you Bradders man, however I still don't like it personally. To your average omni I think this could reinforce the view that "being vegan causes problems in your body" (of course we know it doesn't :)).

I always get weird looks when I go to a Mexican restaurant and leave when I ask what they cook their beans in and they say lard.

Also once I asked at a bar what the fries were cooked in and the guy was like "there isn't any trans fat if that is what you worried about" haha. I was like "I just want to know what they are cooked in".

I have gotten

"God put animals on this earth for us to eat and enjoy"
and by the same person
"Cows don't have feelings"

Which turned into a very big debate on how she was ignorant and that branched into a debate about her religion seeings that I am athiest...we don't talk anymore

I have also gotten

"Well I can just pick the meat out and you can eat it"

or

"Why do I have to wash the pan after I make a burger if you are just going to make a garden burger"

The biggest one I ever get, might just be portland, but all the fucking time

"Don't you miss cheese!?", "I couldn't live without cheese"

Many of these questions just get a blank stare and dissapointed head shake in return.

the other day i was eating a salad with mushrooms in it at work and a girl there asked me is mushroom is animal, i sat there waiting for the im joking i no its not. but it was actually a real question.

and one of the others asked if i could use the dryer ( i dont have one anyway) because of the lint she thought it was something of an animal, thank god this girl caught on quickly and realised it isnt and she was quite embarressed but we laughed about it after.

but a good thing is two girls at work are improving for how long i dont no,but one has gone vegetarian due to seeing a truck with animal guts in it while eating mcdonalds,
and the other is on some fasting thing where she says she is vegan(she isnt) but is still eating seafood i just go along with it informing her of other things she shouldnt eat.

Well today my vegan friend said she was talking with a girl she knows and they got onto talking about healthy diets and vegan yadayada. The friend says something like a vegan diet is good but only for certain blood types, and whilst she would like to be vegan it doesn't suit her.

WTF?

How convenient.

my ex boyfriend came out with the blood type excuse and quoted tonnes of research etc, most of which it turns out doesn't say that people with type B shouldn't become vegan or vegetarian but rather greater emphasis on certain food groups may be required and also issues related to intolerance towards non vegan food.
I have to say that it is a vaguely intelligent one to come out with, but seriously it is still a crock.

Hhmm yeah that "blood type diet" is utterly ridiculous, being O Negative I'm essentially a carnivore by their rules, so I should be dead by know I guess!

and if anyone's interested, a poll showing the blood types of people on the board: http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2141
