I'm off on holiday (YAY!) in February to The Lakes and stopping in Windemere. I'm doing self catering because I thought it was easier that hunting for somewhere to eat every day but does anyone know any restaurants/cafe's in that area?

Lucky you Sam! :) I love the Lake District, had some great holidays there. Particularly love to visit Lake Windermere and Coniston. I remember being 'just knee high to a grasshopper' and getting in my rubber *dingy and rowing out on the lake. :D I don't think my parents liked it much at the time though....

* I'm not sure how you spell 'dingy'...'dingey'..? ;)

I'm really looking forward to it I haven't been before but everyone raves about how nice it is so I decided to try it for myself- And the apartment I have booked looks gorgeous- I can't wait!!!!!

I remember the Lakeland Peddlar cafe in Keswick being rather good for a nice lunch, was veggie then but remember thinking how nice the vegan selection was, recall a shop that sold nice dairy free choc too somewhere down the High St!

The village bakery place was good too - might be best to ring in advance there make sure they have vegan meals on that day as recall only veggie options were all cheese based.

Sounds like a nice break!

Alison:)

Hooray! Cumbria! Definitely go to The Lakeland Pedlar in Keswick (through little passageway near Ye Olde Friars sweet shop). Cumbria isn't desperately vegan friendly unless you find somewhere specifically veggie but you should be ok. I'm not too impressed with the health food shop in Keswick, but my local one in Penrith is alright if you get that far North.

Enjoy your visit :)

I think it's closed now, Cherry. No more vegan pasties :(

Exactly! The one that was there (small but ok) has been replaced with one of those shops that *looks* like a health food shop (selling nuts and things) but really isn't. I walked in assuming all was well, and shock horror, no tofu!

(You know when you get emails from Vforum they don't include the quotes - I had a minor panic attack thinking that you were talking about Pedlars being closed!!! Except that I don't think they sell pasties  What a relief :D )

Sorry Cherry - didn't mean to freak you out!

BTW vegan lakeland visitors - the local supermarket chain Booths is ok for some vegan stuff. Well, it sells vegan ice cream, anyway :o

Glad you liked :p

Actually Cherry, I just realised that you live in Cumbria ! and so you might be able to help me with a really annoying problem. Last time I was there I took another of a sheep grazing on the mountainside but for the life of me I have never been able to identify the breed. Living at Tower Hill Stables, we have rescued sheep & I am familar with most breeds, but just can't find this one listed in any of the reference materials. I thought as you were in Cumbria you may recognise it & let me know? - I know it's really really really sad, but it's just been bugging me - Do hope you can help..

I hate to break this to you, but i don't think that's a real sheep. There's not much to do up north in the winter, and there's reports of various sexual activities going on with real sheep. Most likely what we're seeing here is the offspring of one such act. The bow tie is the give away.

This is shocking news? Surely you jest? I feel sick

well, having never lived there it is pure speculation, based upon my experience of devon's inbredding/acts of a depraved sexual nature. I'm Cherry will know more in this particular case.

What exactly are you trying to say!

Yaksongs - I haven't seen many sheep like that here. I suspect that it may be from the Borders ;)

Absolutely agree. I went there last year - fabulous and worth a detour if necessary. Unless you have an aversion to cyclists in tight shorts, in which case it might be rather a shock. :D

I also suggest you check out: Stefan's Bistro Queens Square, Bowness-on-Windermere

Although not a specialist vegetarian place, they were very happy to accomodate us, and the food was excellent. I suggest you call them first to make sure they've not changed policy.

:D Of course if you don't have an aversion...

Yaksongs, just had another look at the sheep. It's OBVIOUSLY from the Borders, or further. It's wearing tartan!! That's not Cumbrian! If it had a bar of mint cake then ....actually, no, then you'd probably know it was a tourist :D

Or a pint of bitter, depending on the subspecies :)
