Boca Chickn Patty

So at one store (Kroger) Bocas chickn patty doesnt contain egg-whites in it, its even listed in small writing as VEGAN.

Go to another store (wholefoods), and the packaging looks exactly the same. No noticable difference, execpt it has egg-whites in it.

Why would a company make two different versions of the exact same product. If they dont have to put egg-whites in it, and make a vegan version, then why even make a version with egg in it?

It bothers me to no end that wholefoods has some kind of weird version of this product that has egg in it.

There is a similar situation in the UK with Realeat chicken style pieces - some have eggs in and some do not. This is because they have removed the eggs from the recipe but some places still have the old stock.

Perhaps the same is happening in that case.

I dont even understand the reason a company would make a "Meat Replacement" and then go in and put animal parts in it. Sorta defeats the whole reason of making it in the first place.

Looks like they took it out very recently. Their chik'n used to all have egg whites in them, so at least they are moving in the right direction.

I used to like Morningstar Farms Chic patties when I was a vegetarian, but they, too, have egg whites in them. It makes no sense, and I doubt that it is needed.

Now I just don't eat any of it except once in a great while I'll have a Vegan grillers by them if my daughter is craving "burgers" for dinner.

It's the same thing here...we go to a regular market and they are vegan...and then we go to our organic health foods market and they have the ones with egg whites!
As KarmaGirl said, I think it's a recent change in the ingredients...But it would be interesting to see what the company says...

Well went to the site and this is what they have in them according to that. Make note of the small print in the upper left...sounds like they change ingredients from time to time? Errrr ...just how long do they keep?

I followed your link and I found it interesting that it say "natural flavor (non-meat)"...maybe I'm suspicious, but that makes me wonder why they didn't say "vegetable source," like maybe it's not flavoring from meat, but it could be from dairy or egg source?

I wouldn't trust Boca anyhow. Boca Foods Company is a subsidiary of Kraft Foods which is majority owned by Altria Group which was formerly named Philip Morris Companies Inc.--the largest contributor to the Republican Party, by the way (as of 2004).

All the fake chicken burger products here contain egg whites. I think they use it as a binding agent.

They did recently change their ingredients, and for the chikn nuggets.

my co-op carries a different version called Boca naturals, which doesn't contain artificial stuff and uses organic ingrediants.

Is this the one you mean?? I think it sounds like your co-op is stocked up on old stuff.

I noticed that at Wild Oats as well, but saw the vegan ones at a standard stupidmarket out here called Marsh. I assume Wild Oats and Whole Foods are trying to sell their backstock before bringing in the newer versions of that product. I tend to think Boca products move slower at a health oriented store than they do at a standard stupidmarket becuase there are just so many better products to choose from. At the stupidmarket the Boca products do well because they lack a good selection of alternative products.

No it doesn't really, because vegans are not primarily the consumers they make meat replacements for. They're for people who are told by their doctors to reduce saturated fat and cholesterol, and egg whites have neither, I believe. There are a lot more people out there with heart bypasses etc., who can't live without their sausages and chicken nuggets, than there are vegans (I wonder why :rolleyes: ), and they are who this stuff is made for mostly, although when enough vegans ask companies to provide true vegan options they do listen to a limited extent. But lots of vegans get by fine without these artificial meats, and some of them are way too "meaty" for my liking anyway. :eek:
