View Full Version : Vegan Organic Tomato?

I just purchased 2 tomato plants and bought organic potting mix for the container. I don't have access to vegan compost.

Is there a way to grow them so they are vegan organic? Before vegan I would use fish fertilizer or other natural things but I'm a bit stumped on this. I'm not sure that the soil was vegan but would like to 'raise' them vegan if possible. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sheila

In the UK you can get a seaweed-based liquid fertiliser especially for tomatoes. Maybe you could find something like that?

I'll have to look for that. My inlaws were trying to tell me I had to put a whole raw egg in the planting hole. That was not going to work!

...or if you can get some seaweed, this page has instructions for making your own liquid feed from it:

Not sure if you'd need a particular type for tomatoes though as they need a specific nutrient balance I think.

It's a couple of years since I grew tomatoes but I seem to remember being advised not to fertilise them until the first fruits started to form, so maybe you have a little while to do your research :)

The Vegetarian Society/Natural Collection (http://www.vegsoc.org/store/)have a seaweed fertiliser:

"Seaweed Feed is a natural soil conditioner which increases the availability of nutrients in the soil into a form that can be more easily utilised by plants. This will lead to an increase in nutrient uptake, strong root systems and overall improvement in plant health and vigour. Can be applied as a foliar spray by using a hose end applicator or by watering can to the soil. "

But last year I grew about 12 plants from a packet of seeds with no fertiliser at all and they thrived - more than enough toms to go round!

Thanks everyone for the links. I guess I was just being lazy and didn't bother to search the net.

Here's a great one for vegan organic gardening. It has quite a few links to good resources: http://www.biofertilizer.com/en/organic_gardening_vegan.htm

Thanks again,

Plums,
I took your advice so far and no fertilizer. Since I planted them 2 weeks ago they have doubled in size. It's weird but there are even flowers on them and they are only about 24 inches high now. Well maybe I'll have some early.
Thanks,
Sheila
