as far as pan frying, you must melt the marg in the pan first, then place bread in pan. top with cheese. cover pan. close sandwich only after properly toasted and 'cheese' melted.
it's amazing the difference it makes. :D
not so sure about this tomato, pineapple, sweetcorn idea though... maybe pineapple, veggie ham and 'cheese'.. w a lil peppercini...
I used to like mash, sweetcorn and mayo. I haven't had a sandwich toaster for many years now - I couldn't bear cleaning it.
ours wipes off easily... it's got that non-stick coating.
a few suggestions:
- lots of sliced mushrooms and satay sauce
- left over curry
- soysages and tomato
i'm with hemlock on this. though i am slovenly..not that i'm suggesting you are hemlock. i've rarely properly cleaned mine, and i'm still alive :D
ooh, we never clean ours, just wipe grease over the hotplates and the bits come off at the same time :D!
the grime adds extra flavour, everyone knows that!!
I had a lovely sandwich toaster and then my omni family decided to borrow it without asking and left their food residue all over it which subsequently went mouldy.
I'll pass for the time being thanks.
I pick out the big chunks, but that grease is there for later:o
why has no one mentioned cheezly and beans?? it's the most amazing toastie in the world! damn, i want one now.
What's brown sauce?
It's HP Sauce or an equivalent
It's like steak sauce then, or more like worcestershire sauce?
tinned spag - yum!
to me it's more like steak sauce.
and i agree about beans !
i also like some mushrooms cut in slices. or i go more south France and mix green&red bell peppers with olive oil and herbes de provence (blend of herbs, delicious on almost everything). sometimes i add a few tofu cubes.
This thread is making me wish I was making something other than LENTILS AND VEGETABLES for dinner.
you know, it's pretty easy. just turn on the oven, get a few slices of bread, put everything you want on the slices, and bake for a few minutes. it's usually a great way of recycling a "not so fesh but still eatable" bread and leftovers.
lol .. I had already started cooking ...
Toasted cheezly is best. Though since cheezly doesn't seem to melt I actually find it better to toast the bread, then add the cheezly sliced on top ... I like the JUXTAPOSITION
I've just been given a diabolo toaster and this is the thread I need.
I have tried:
grated apple - simple but yummy
steamed apple - even better
steamed apple and grated carrot - not that great
(my son likes apples, hence the theme)
mexican cheezley with finely chopped jalapenos - lovely
Having read your suggestions I'm off to mash some potatoes and open a tin of pineapples!

I want a toasted sandwich maker now; I never did try mashed potato. (I stupidly gave mine away.)
I always thought one of those diabolo toasters would be good for Tofu Omlettes.
Baked beans are a curiously lovely sandwich filling.... they take a while to heat up and are veeeerrry hot when they get there though.
Tofu and spinach with a little herbs to make a rough aproximation of some spanacopita (sp) isn't bad either :)
clearly I need to get a sandwich maker...and pronto.
Now I've just had chocolate spread and banana - that was good but messy. All I've eaten today is toasted sandwiches - must remember to eat something different tomorrow.

Chickpea cutlet with a vegan cheese :D
Avocado with red onion and a few left over grilled veggies. Yomp
Sliced carrots, raisins, avocado, and chopped up cashews. Mwah!
What is this sandwich toaster of which you all speak?
Erm, is that some kind of double-sided pancake griddle?! Where's the circular bread come from? Such a thing, I think, would be essential for college life. :)
I feel inspired by all the fillings.
Again, my sandwich machine has been in the cupboard for a while, but will be coming out again soon. My fav fillings are: peanut butter and banana, hummus with tomato chutney, and redwood melty mozzarella, pineapple and mushroom (kind of a pizza thing).
I will be trying the avocado one though. Yummy!!!
One thing I would like to try with one of these things, is a cheesy sauce, mushrooms, broccoli, onions, bell peppers, cilantro, freshly ground black pepper, and some garlic.
