Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
^^
Hi ps
Perhaps it's me but I do find terms such as "99% vegan" and "vegan diet with lapses" confusing because they don't really mean anything to me. Whatever the public perception of Clinton is, we, as vegans know that veganism is more than just what a person eats. Even if Clinton does eventually manage to convert his diet to statistically 100% plant based, this won't in itself make him a "vegan". (If he eats 100% kosher, this won't make him Jewish either!) I think we need to continually point out this truth to omnis, otherwise there is a danger that the message in our beliefs becomes diluted. What do you think Pat?

I think we'll wait and see what comes of it. I'm glad he left out the V-word in favor of plant-based.

My husband.
Actually, it's pretty much a done deal, as he really doesn't have any choice: he's broke, can't afford to eat out during the work week, and I'm the only chef in the house, bwah-ha-haaaaaaaaaaaaa! :bigsmile2:

Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
There have been so many good answers thus far. Though he is the first to come to mind, I don't think Obama would be a good idea since he isn't all that well liked it seems...
I love the idea of Johnny Depp going vegan! He's my favorite actor and you never hear anything bad about him. Angelina Jolie would also be great.
Perhaps Miley Cyrus going vegan would be good, so many kids love her. Or even better, if Hannah Montana became vegan! As much as I dislike her it would be a great influence on kids I think.

Aye, thats a bit like being a non smoker in between cigarettes or a teatotaller in between drinks?
Maybe we should form an 'MA' support group? I'll go first ...
"Hi my name is Cupid and I'm a meataholic but I haven't had a burger for 272 months ...."

Hi CS
You've just reminded me of the first Leeds Veggies meeting I went to in 1990. People sitting round a large table drinking cups of tea, eating biscuits and talking about the "problems of resisting temptation etc" since they'd last met. This puzzled me because I'd found the change to being a veggie quite untraumatic. It carried on like this for quite a few minutes before the lass at the side of me asked the group why being veggie was so difficult. It turned out that both she and I were in a meeting of Leeds Alcoholics Anonymous, Leeds Veggies were meeting in the next room!:o

Angelina Jolie would also be great.
I used to be a big fan of her. She seems to be able to think for herself, cares about what's going on in the world around her, does more than other celebrities to help, etc. She's bisexual and not afraid to challenge societal norms (though she's less anti-conformist than she used to be). She's an atheist. Not to mention drop dead gorgeous. I used to think, hmm, if only she could go vegan. (As well as not have more children and go back to just adopting, like she said she would before).
However, recently (month ago?) she made a statement about how she used to be vegan, but she had to go back to eating meat because she wasn't getting enough nutrition and she would have died if she stayed vegan. I scoffed when I saw this - I didn't believe she could be that ignorant. But I encountered the quote elsewhere, and it seems legitimate. Suddenly I find myself not so interested in her anymore...

Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
^I never heard that! Makes me think twice about her. She must not have known anything about veganism then.

I was thinking that I'd really, really love Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory) to go vegan. He's soooooo awesome :o:D

I wouldn't want the pope to become vegan because then all of the bad things about him would be associated with us. (Ofcourse, I'd like him to be vegan for the animals sake, but for our cause it would be disastorous.)
I also wouldn't want the pope to become vegan because there are so many brilliant people on this planet who do not give any credit to what the pope says.

Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
But i think if Lionel Messi turned vegan, that would have great impact. (And he might play even better, too.)

Since I was just posting in the music thread that Rob Zombie is a vegetarian, I'll also post it here: it'd be nice if he went vegan! We need more people from the metal crowd to make this change!
-
Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
Now if the thread title was "Which significant person do you wish had gone vegan in the last 15 years?", I would say: Harry Potter.

Between her or Justin Beiber. Couldn't imagine the publicity veganism would get :)

Doctor Oz...
So many people follow his show and worship everything he says. If he went vegan and reaped the benefits of it the influence he would have would be significant
-
Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
Looking at the thread question from an individual animal's point of view, "a significant person is anybody who comes along and wants to eat me".
If I was having a horrible life, and then was going to be killed and eaten, having a utilitarian outlook might not necessarily be much comfort to me.

Haha, definitely! Other people have mentioned Hermione should be vegan; that would completely fit her character. She could / would have convince(d) Harry and Ron to go vegan, too, I bet. :)

I know, I was very surprised as well. :)
I thought of someone else who should go vegan: Noam Chomsky. He's brilliant, and I've been enjoying watching YouTube clips of him talk about capitalism, the media, anarchism, etc. lately. He's spoken favorably about the animal rights movement and animal liberation, but insists that animal rights and veganism are not top priorities for him, and so he's not made the move to veganism. Check out the following Facebook page if you're interested in seeing his rationale.

Oprah Winfrey and/or Ellen Degeneres!
Interesting that you made this mention of Ellen and she did go vegan! I totally agree with the Oprah nomination...20 odd million watch her show in the US alone. Whenever she endorses a product, the sales skyrocket. They call it the "Oprah effect".

Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
I would really like my mom to become vegan over night. She had a heart transplant 11 years ago and 2 years ago she had a kidney transplant. She insists that her docotrs know best and stubbornly refuses to listen to me when I tell her that diet is one of the biggest contributing factors to health.

I'm not sure exactly where I stand politically, but I'm a pretty staunch anti-capitalist, and I find ideas in anarchism and socialism appealing. I think I could call myself a veganarchist (and how friggin' cool a word is that!?).
Love this T-shirt, might buy sometime:

The Pope. It would be nice if he also added that animals do have souls.
Apparently the pope and many christians forgot to read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 Versus 18 through 20.
18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

Regarding Richard Dawkins, here is an excellent discussion between him and Peter Singer. If you can't watch the whole thing just skip to 29:30 and Dawkins explains why he eats meat despite agreeing with all of Singer's moral arguments against eating meat. Two of the world's most brilliant minds in my opinion.

Thank you so much for posting this link - really really interesting to see richard squirm and the part about why you chose a moral life was amazing. Seemed to be to be saying that you either think from the inside out i.e. egotistically or from the outside in and look at the whole picture. Must find some more links about Singer - funnily enough i just bought his book last night. Such an interesting man - not vegan tho as he thinks it is ok to eat roadkill.

If one of the world's most brilliant minds eats meat in spite of agreeing with all these arguments against doing it... so much for the value of the human mind. :-)
I hope Richard Dawkins will look at this clip one day, listen to himself when he explains his own meat eating with conformism, and comparing it with singing Christmas carols, then look at the 'for reason and science' part of his own logo, and realize that something is wrong. :)
But the clip documents that even if people know and agree in all the arguments against using animal products, many still keep using them.
The problems lies somewhere else.

People can be brilliant and weak tho - I think you have to be a strong person to comit to be vegan and to follow through with a life commitment. It is one thing to understand and quite another to live the philosophy eh?
-
Re: Which significant person would you like to become vegan overnight?
^^^
At least Dawkins is helping eradicate religious belief which seems to be a major stumbling block in enabling people to have compassion for animals (or at least enough compassion to actually do something positive, such as go vegan.) Quite amazing really, the things that people will do when they believe that "God says it's ok" to do them.

Of course, people often think it's going to be more difficult than it really is, and I suppose if you eat a lot of meals out it could be a bit of a pain.
However, if someone like Richard Dawkins went around demanding vegan meals, everyone would soon know what a vegan meal is :D.
