Am feeling another trip to Brighton coming on!
I expect the speed depends what else is going on there. I'm sure it wasn't particularly fast but I suppose making the stuff freshly has something to be said for it, if they wash the lettuce that is?

I love Iydea! They don't have a huge range of vegan main options, but plenty of cake!
Have you been to Aloka yet Troutina? They usually have wonderful vegan cupcakes. What I also like is that the cake changes - Infinity has more range than Iydea but if you buy cake often you have soon tried all the ones they do. I wish they would do a 'guest' cake flavour every now and again.

Hello friends of the George.
This is just a quick message to let you know that even though Steve and the team have left the George, the events they set up are continuing.
The pub remains Vegetarian/Vegan and will shortly be refurbished.
Every THURSDAY, there is OPEN MIC NIGHT -

Please join this group if you're quizzically minded!
Thanks to Steve and co. for getting the pub back on track and I believe new manager Ben has some good things in store for the place!
Take it easy - hope to see some of you soon,
Robin (Open Mic Man)
Great news, thanks Risker.
That's very much at odds with the reports on other forums, though (including people who were regulars and/or work at the George) - so will be interesting to hear what people think if they go there.
Hello Brighton-dwellers :)
I'm planning a weekend in Brighton in a couple of months time, and i wondered if any of you have any suggestions for places to visit, places to stay, and any particularly good vegan places to eat (does anywhere do raw??)
Thanks!
sup, y'all.
Just wrote a new post on my blog, and it's Brighton-centric! Aren't I marvellous?

Aloka's evening a la carte raw menu starts up again this thursday.
kitchen closes 9.30 now
Following on from bryzee's poor recent experience of The George which I read about on his blog (link above) I have just read this (part of a review by this blogger).

Unfortunately The George has decided that they don't really care about vegans any more. They've been taken over by local pub chain Indigo Leisure and given a new manager who certainly isn't interested in the food side of things. He's explained that he wants to move away from veganism as he doesn't want people coming into his pub, ordering food and not drinking alcohol...vegans, apparently, don't drink enough. He's planning on focusing on the drinks side of things just like all the 100's of other pubs and bars all over Brighton.
So firstly they're not going to be getting any vegan substitutes for things any more, that means no Cheezly, no Redwoods bacon, no Fry's burgers, no vegan sour cream, no vegan ice cream, no vegan cream and no vegan mayonnaise. Secondly it seems to mean that they're going to be using Quorn sausages and labelling them as vegan and thirdly it means no more of my awesome vegan cakes!
Fail. I hope nobody goes there.
Pants about the George... Despite its ups and more downs over the years I have always gone in and eaten there, mostly because its a veggie pub, and that's a rare thing.
I've been in twice since the recent changes, they have taken off the (v) next to the quorn sausages dishes, so they must have been told by an angry vegan!! Or maybe they just worked out that quorn ain't vegan ;)
The food I've had in there recently has been ok/nice, but its rubbish that they don't do fry's burgers anymore, this was one of the reasons that I used to find myself going in there.. And not having any of the vegan substitutes is very rubbish.
Its a shame because as well as the change in vegan availability for food, its also got a lot of potential to be a really cool pub, but it lacks character and atmosphere.. Wonder if they'll improve this?
oh well, I'll still be going in there for now, they still seemed to have a fair amount of vegan options when I last went in a few weeks ago
x x
the royal sovereign does a very fine sunday lunch.check it out. they have vegan food durung the week too. havnt had a chance to check it out during the week yet
this is the chef who was running the earth and stars up until recently so hes moved his opperations over.
I popped in to The George today and spoke to the new chef Malcolm. He says he will definitely be doing vegan food as he is well aware that around 40% of their customers are vegan.
They will remain a veggie pub. They are not 'moving away from' catering for vegans, they are moving away from meat and dairy substitues (though he did say he would still have vegan mayo) and concentrating on actually cooking. I think that is good news.
He is self employed and has been hired by the new management to handle the food side of things. They are closing on Sunday for 2-3 weeks to install a new kitchen and will reopen with a new menu of fresh cooked food such as home-made sausages and tapas dishes. He is not veggie himself so is welcoming feedback and suggestions on his steep learning curve. He seemed like a nice genuine bloke so let's give him a chance and not write off The George yet.
I forgot to say there is a new manager starting at The George soon (Mark I think). At the moment the wine listed on the blackboard doesn't include info on which are vegan.
They are changing all the pumps and will have lots of ales. We need to make sure they realise how important it is to know what beers and wines are vegan and label them as such.
Thanks for the research Marrers - must say I have found the messages about the George (not just here) a bit confusing up until now!
If they're going to have home-made vegan food, as opposed to bought-in, that's good news isn't it?
Ah that's good news then, it's unfortunate that there isn't as wide a selection (I went in there fairly recently but didn't eat anything as we'd already had something) but if they are focusing on cooking from stratch more then perhaps it will improve the options and are there and expand in time, thanks for finding that out Marrers as everything I'd heard up to now had been very much to the contrary :)
Message below is an email that someone from Brighton forwarded around - some of you might find it useful.

Urban Decay makeup stand in Debenhams sells makeup that is suitable for vegans.* The young girl working on the stand is very knowledgeable about veganism and also has a book which lists all products suitable for vegans (defined by a purple paw print next to the item).* About 99% of their products are suitable for vegans.
Also Pizzaface Pizza Delivery (in Kemp Town) seem also to have an interest in veganism.* All their pizzas can be made with vegan mozzarella and all their pizza bases are very authentic and tasty.* I can recommend the 'John O' pizza.* When ordering just ask for a vegan version of any of their pizzas.* They also only serve/sell Booja Booja ice cream and no nasty soft drinks, like Coca Cola.* Only Whole Earth products etc.
Thanks for that Zero, I'll definitely check out the pizza place next time I'm down.
Best Pizza delivery ever? I wish I could move to Brighton.

p.s. who's up for a pizza party on the beach?
i sure am!
I'm thinking of spending my birthday in Brighton and I really want to go somewhere nice for afternoon tea - who sells the best vegan cake in Brighton? :D
Aloka the Ladies sure know how to make a dreamy cake. at the mo theres slabs of tiffin available!! oooooh!
Infinity Café, Waikikamukau or The Sanctuary I reckon. Food for Friends usually has a couple of vegan cakes too though.
I'd say Aloka, Infinity Cafe or VBites (where you can get the same cakes as Infinity Cafe plus a few others like red velvet cake and cupcakes). VBites has the most choice - or it did last summer anyway, I haven't been for a few months. They had 8-12 different full sized cakes and a conveyor belt of cupcakes.
I haven't been to The Sanctuary but I don't think there is much choice in Waikikamukau.
Thanks! Lots of choice. Maybe as it will be my birthday, morning tea and afternoon tea will be in order!!
I would have liked to have tried V Bites but my boyf is refusing to go there as he does not like the owner  Perhaps I can talk him into it.
She doesn't serve the cakes, though! He won't have to make small talk with her or anything!
Mr Rose and I are planning to be in Brighton for a few days towards the end of the Festival - anyone else around and fancy tea and buns somewhere at some point?
Maybe RubyRose - let us know when you firm up your plans.
I really, really love that............I think it's brilliant, 'Pizzaface'............what a great name! :)
The chocolate orange cake there is really fantastic. The self-serve buffet was kind of eh though as it's not all you can eat, they have a funny system where they weigh the plates.
Food for Friends is good if expensive. I loved the tofu parcels.
Red Veg is fantastic comfort food.
Infinity has nice cakes and sandwiches.
Eating out in Brighton is pretty expensive but I can't fault the choice. I can't wait to go back and try more of these places! Are there any good vegan friendly places on or around the pier? We couldn't find any. Even the noodle stand cooks the vegetables and meat on the same grill.:undecided:
I spent last Friday in Brighton celebrating my birthday and had a lovely day. Lunch at RedVeg to feed my junk food craving then cake at Aloka - pear and blueberry cake. Yum! :)
I'm glad you didn't go to VBites for cake on my advice Linxie, the cake selection has been drastically reduced.
The cakes cost £3.95 a slice but are the same as those sold at Infinity, Ideya, Sanctuary etc where they cost £2.50-£3 a slice. There were only two flavours of gâteau (but two of each flavour) and the cupcakes were iced rather than frosted which I thought was a shame.
I was there for lunch last weekend just after they had a minor refit in the room where the cakes and kichen are. They have moved the cake island and made it a much smaller island - previously there was a large area in the middle for staff to stand (see pic below). The room is now packed with tables and chairs and is a bit too cramped in my opinion. It's also quite noisy in there when there are children in, due to the play area in the corner. Service was slow but my all-day breakfast was okay. It would have been nicer if the hash browns were made rather than bought.

This is how the refitted area looked before (pic from quarry girl's blog). The counter has been moved and replaced with tables and chairs.
