Sulphur amino acids & quinoa milk
I went to see a naturopath the other day who said that I am consuming too much soy and that I am not getting enough sulphur amino acids in my diet.
She suggested that I drink quinoa milk as it is rich in all amino acids and is a healthier option than soymilk in the long term. Has anyone tried quinoa milk here? At the moment you can't get it in Adelaide. I have to get it mailed from Sydney and it costs 7 dollars a litre ):
Also, does anyone know of any good vegan sources of sulphur amino acids and is it really such a big issue?

don't we get that from eating bananas?

Grains according to that site. I thought soya was complete in essential amino acids, anyway
Re: Sulphur amino acids & quinoa milk
Yes I believe so too but apparently it is best not to rely totally upon soy (see the thread on soy).

She is referring to cysteine and methionine.
You can search on vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains for their cysteine and methionine contents using this tool
http://nutritiondata.com/nutrient-search.html
and add more of those foods to your diet. No need to throw away money on some exotic processed food.
Also, be aware, several studies are showing life extension and cancer protection benefits from methionine restriction. Your naturopath probably has not read these studies or even heard of them.

Thanks for the web link. This is very useful!
I have decided to change my diet accordingly with a couple of tablespoons of wheat germ and wheat bran on my cereal with oat milk instead of soy and a handful of cashews, almonds and brazil nuts. I think that I should obtain sufficient sulphur amino acids from this combination without overdoing it. I too am aware of the studies regarding the benefits of reduced methionine.

wowow
I've recently discovered Quinoa Milk.
It's seriously amazing stuff.
First off, it tastes really good. It's very fragrant (a cardamon version of the grain), creamy, low in calories, is 14-15% protein (which is great for me, as I'm vegan and have trouble with my iron intake), has really good amino acids and is easy to digest..
It's really nice with Earl Grey tea by the way :)
In coffee not so much... but fantastic in black teas and in cerial and such. Just... when you're cooking with it take into consideration it's fragrance and strong flavour... as it might not agree.
But Quinoa Milk ftw! ^^
