Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
i hardly ever eat bread any more because i think i'm sensitive to wheat, but today i ate beans on toast for dinner because i wanted something quick, and now i have really bad stomach cramps and feel sick. :( i really should stop eating bread completely but it's soooo hard :o

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I don't have any allergies, that I know of anyway. I eat anything I want without problems. :) I knew someone with a 'shellfish' allergy and they would swell up....at least they have to give the sea life a break.

I don't have any allergies, but I have noticed recently that eating grapes seems to make me feel bad afterwards.... Maybe I just eat too many in one sitting!
I read just last night that "they" spray something on grapes. Can't remember what but I took note because they make me sick too.

I get this when I eat some oranges??? My mouth goes a bit numb.
I also get a really sharp stinging pain in my neck, below my ears where my lymph glands are, whenever i eat anything fatty... like vegan cheese or margarine?
Its so bad I have to hold my neck with my hands.
Anyone got any ideas what this might be? My GP just shrugged her shoulders!
I get a pain in my breast (I assume the gland) when I eat fatty foods. I think.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
mushrooms
pickles
raw apples
The apple one is fairly recent. I think I've become intolerant because I drank too much apple cider when I was in high school. Last fall I had a little bit of apple cider and I wound up with a nasty sinus infection. Eating an apple straight up or drinking apple juice gives me sore throats and/or diarrhea. :( But I L O V E apple cider.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Can you develope an allergy as an adult by overeating something? For example, could I have developed a soy allergy by overconsuming Isolated Soy Protein Powder?
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I don't have any specific allergies, apart from possibly porridge/oats.
I love porridge but sometimes when I have it, I sneeze. And if I have it for a prolonged time (i.e. for breakfast for many days), I start to feel a bit nauseous. :(
Mmmm, but porridge with weetabix and raisens (sp?) is in lush!

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
nothing, thank goodness :)

I've heard that it can happen if you have too much of one thing, that is why it is advised to have variety.
I can't remember where I read this though.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I am extemely allergic to potato:( , which I recently discussed in a different thread. I go into anaphalactic shock. It is extremely rare. Now I'm also realizing I might have a wheat allergy. I have chronic sinusitus and I was very disappointed that it didn't clear up when I became a vegan. I'm doing an elimination diet now and feeling better. It's kind of disappointing, though because my diet is already so limited what with being vegan, allergic to potato, and type 2 diabetic. Oh well, no more whining...:o

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I heard you shouldn't eat bananas or avocados if you have a latex allergy. I have a mild latex allergy (bandages give me rashes unless I specifically buy latex-free) but bananas and avocados are my favourite fruits. :( :(

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
No I don't have any food allergies or intolerances, but before going vegan I was very heavy milk drinker (full cream or skim) and had very bad asthma (two ventolin puffers would only last me a month). Since going vegan, and only drinking soy milk and products my asthma has subsided that a single puffer can last up to six months! A friend of my mothers has also said that drinking milk caused her asthma to inflate so she only now drinks soy milk.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
i don´t know if i can actually call it an allergy, but i can´t eat corn in any form (cobs, fresh, canned, cornmeal, oil, etc.) whithout getting the glands in my throat all bloated
it´s sad because one of the food staples in the place i live is corn.... and it tastes so good

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I love melon but everytime I eat it my throat gets sore and burny, so I usually try and avoid eating it. It happens most with honeydew melons.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
a friend of my is allergic to strawberry flavouring. real strawberries...fine. artificial flavouring - throat like a pillow. best bit is, she went to the doctor who gave her PILLS. she pointed out that she'd be unlikely to be able to swallow them, and they just told her to avoid eating it then!

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I have oral allergy syndrone, I get a sore mouth, swollen tongue, gums, lips, and sometimes a sore tight throat and ear ache when I eat some fruits and nuts. Apples are the worst. I normally get an instant earache. Walnuts are pretty bad too. Still eat everything though :D
I had problems with tartrazine as a child - it gave me terrible nightmares! Weird :o
Not food related but I am also allergic to shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc... They make my skin burn up and go very blotchy!
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I've whittled the list of foods to avoid down to...
Onions, Celery, Leeks. Basically anything really fibrous. What makes it so different from Cabbage texturally, I have no idea.
It makes eating out fun :( If I eat something I shouldn't I get painful stomach cramps and diarroea. If it wasn't for the great people I see, I wouldn't bother leaving the house.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Aubergine - that must make ordering in restaurants a nightmare.
I have had reaction to coffee, I got rash around my mouth and felt like my throat was closing up. I occasionally have a cup of coffee as I really crave it sometimes but never more than once a month.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Mushrooms
I get terrible stomach cramps and everything just has to escape from both ends and it lasts a couple of days :(
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I'm allergic--or at least sensitive--to dairy, a fact I only found out after I gave it up. Looking back, I think I could have had a happier (or less miserable) childhood if I had had a pediatrician who had an idea what caused my "mystery nosebleeds."
Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

Hives
I have been a bit stressed and have suddenly developed what appears to be a food sensitivity. Something is bringing my face out in painful red scaly blotches (hives?). Some days it seems to be almost gone and then it comes back.
Have arranged to see the GP next week but in the meantime am trying to nail the cause by keeping a diary of food and symptoms. Prime suspects at the moment are strawberries and/or peanuts, so I'll be avoiding those, but I have two questions for other people who suffer from this sort of thing or know about it:
1) What would be good to soothe the skin? I've tried various moisturisers, antihistamine cream and calamine lotion but they all make the burning sensation worse. Have taken a couple of antihistamine tablets when it's been bad and they do help a bit but I don't like taking them.
2) What would be a vegan starting point for an elimination diet if I need to do one? I've seen rice and lamb suggested :( - would rice and beans be a vegan equivalent, I wonder? Not many people are sensitive to beans are they?
All advice gratefully received.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Harpy - I think I have had that reaction to strawberries when I was younger, When I get any reaction to anything I just drink lots of water to flush it out of my system and do not use any cream or lotion until the redness/ burning feeling has completely subsided.
Thats just my experience anyway, I'm not sure about elimination diet thing?
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Thank you, Aphrodite - I will follow your suggestion of drinking plenty of water. I'm quite thirsty anyway so it won't be difficult.
It would be better if I knew what I'm trying to flush out so I can avoid putting any more of it in  It's not only strawberries unfortunately as I haven't had any for a couple of weeks but the reaction thing has come back. The elimination diet would help with that - you eliminate almost everything and then add things back in one at a time to see what causes the reaction - but it's a bit drastic.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Harpy - I find that anything I have an allergic reaction to tends to be anything I have strong cravings for - its really annoying. Coffee I really crave but I try to stay away because it produces very strong reaction in me.
I have had a reaction to brie before and I used to love that as well. It gave me a rash all around my wrists it looked like I had been wearing handcuffs - Lol:o
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Thank you - I will think about that. You had a double motive for avoiding brie then!
Can't think of anything I particularly crave offhand. I have been eating quite a bit of chocolate lately (stress management :o ) but I had laid off it for the past couple of days so it's not that (or not only that).

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
You could try eating things like barley and quinoa for your elimination diet. Try to pick items that you don't consume that often or recently since those items are most likely not related to your allergic reaction. Ofcourse wheat, gluten, soy, and nuts are all allergy culprits. Try to eliminate them from your diet one at a time, if it's possible. For your rash, you might want to try a homeopathic pill of some sort.
Good Luck :)
I have had loads of food allergies and I know it's no fun trying to figure them out!

As long as you're not gluten-sensitive; I was surprised to find that barley contains gluten--as does rye.

Thanks Angela - food diary suggests culprit is the rather obvious one, peanuts, and after avoiding them for a couple of days I'm feeling better though still a bit red and scaly looking :o Not sure about the strawberries. So anyway I'm hoping I won't have to do the elimination diet, but will remember your ideas if I do.
Aphrodite's suggestion of drinking a lot of water also seemed to help.
I've never had anything like this before and am a bit indignant that it's caught up with me now - the rest of you have my sympathy.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Harpy - sorry to hear that :( . As peanuts can sometimes harbour unseen moulds it could be that which is causing the problem  .
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Well, cobweb, they were the best peanuts :D but still...
frank language, I seem to be OK re gluten fortunately but wheat bran is another story. Worried everyone will think I'm just being neurotic but fortunately, in a way, the hives or whatever they are have been quite impressive.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
For the skin rash use ALoe Vera gel... it does not burn at all and it works very quickli. you can get it from Fresh and Wild or Holland and barrett (at least it works for me!)
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Thanks Manzana - I'll try that if the rash comes back. Latest theory is that it's my conditioner that brings on the rash so I'm giving that a miss for now (as well as peanuts and strawberries  ).
I saw the doc and he thought that it was yeast-related sebhorreic dermatitis and prescribed what seems to be a cortisone cream - couldn't be bothered pointing out that I'd already tried one, but I won't get the prescription filled unless all else fails.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
hope you find out what's causing it and it clears up soon, harpy, it sounds horrible. :(
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Cheers Gorilla - it's actually OK most of the time until whatever the trigger is happens. Just hoping my latest theory is correct!
It's a very ideologically sound seeming conditioner (Australian Organics) but it has a lot of plant extracts in it so maybe one of those doesn't agree with me. I had a similar thing with a Tom's of Maine deodorant once, only that time the rash was on my armpits of course

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
For more than a year, I have noticed problems after eating potatoes. Aside from the fact that they typically pass through my body mostly undigested, I have also had headaches, a 20% increase in heart rate, slight difficulty breathing, and swelling of the chest. Could this be an allergy?
I had developed mild intolerances to casein and lactose, but I no longer classify cow products as food.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I had peanut butter Puffins for breakfast and Fritos at work. For dessert I had swelling of the throat and for an encore I expect blackheads on the outside of my eustachian tubes.
-
Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
Think my lergy must have been from that conditioner, as since it I stopped using it it's more or less cleared up. I'm OK with peanuts, not sure about strawberries as I seemed to have a bit of a flareup after eating one last week (yes, one  )
Anyway, the score in the diagnostic competition is harpy:1 doctor:0 :D
Thanks, everyone, for the support, it really helped.

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?

Re: Food Allergies? Eating things you shouldn't?
I'm noticing that my tonsils swell up a little and my throat feels sore and scratchy when I drink almost any herbal/fruit tea these days, but particularly anything with berries, mint, or chamomile. They're all organic so it's not a pesticide thing  . Any ideas?.
