Tofutti & bone char sugar - Whats the deal?
In Australia, there is no such thing as bone char sugar.
I heard that they use it a fair bit in the States. I would like to know more and if I am in danger of consuming imported products containing it.
I was told that bone char is made from (you guessed it!) bones, and is used to "bulk up" white processed sugar. I was also told by a friend that Toffuti, "better than cream cheese" makers are using it in thier products including icecream.
Apparently it is not an ingredient that is printed! Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!
Does anyone else know anything about this?

I know how you feel, Kate. British sugars aren't refined using bone char, but american ones generally (though not always) are. It'll make it that bit more awkward when I go to NYC in March!

And i was wondering about something someone said on recipezarr about a vegan recipe to make sure you get a vegan sugar source! I never knew that was a possibility. How many more foods that should be vegan are not? Anyone hear about Emmes gelitan?
