Tribe of Heart have a deal where you can buy 10 copies of The Witness for $100, on the understanding that they are to be given away, so anyone who wants to get it out in the public domain can do that and donate copies to schools,, libraries etc.
Not everyone has a credit card, DVD player, or is in the correct region to even play the DVD for sale. Of course I don't begrudge Tribe Of Heart finance but it does seem a strange message to enforce that only buying vegans in the main would ever get to see it.
Anyway like I said Peaceable Kingdom by Tribe Of Heart is linked to here and thats available on DVD as is the topic of this thread Earthlings.
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Docu "Earthlings"
That seven minute clip is online only exclusive content. It isn't from the film proper. There is however a promo trailer.
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Docu "Earthlings"
I think if Tribe of Heart has a problem with a low quality version of their video being able to be viewed for free, their issue is with Google since it is being provided by their video service. Also, they can require that a fee be paid to view it on Google Video like some of their other content providers do.
The Google version is of lower quality, and the download provided is a link to the stream of it for those who have a Google Video player. The download available is not formatted for burning to DVD or VCD.
I think before jumping to conclusions, someone should contact Tribe of Heart and see what their views are on the free viewing of the low quality version of the video.

Through the google links I've downloaded Earthlings, The Witness and Peacebale Kingdom. All play independent of needing the google video player. The quality is near perfect also. Perhaps the answer copyright aside would be to give donation links with video URLs and encourage that.
Also it's a shame if The Witness DVD contains no extras aside from a 43 minute film. PK is undergoing a DVD re-release with new bonus features which is good incentive.

Tigerlilly, I'm shocked to hear this!!! I'm pretty new on this board but everytime I see your posts I'm so impressed with what you have to say and the courage you have at 18 to take on this lifestyle (I hope I don't sound condesending with the age comment, as I'm not much older than you :) it just that at 18 I wasn't doing anything of substance or nearly as profound as what you are doing).
Why are you questioning? Do you feel hopeless? Sometimes I feel that way but I just think, "Hey, maybe I won't change the world, or even one person with this, but I feel so good just knowing that no animal will ever suffer on my account - I can do my part".
I shouldn't have made those comments, but it's too late to edit them out, enough people have already seen them. My reasonings are my own business and I do not feel comfortable explaining any further.
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Doco "Earthlings"
I don't know exactly which comments you're referring to but I haven't seen anything of yours that 'shouldn't have been said.'
Not enough people express how they really feel and, of course, feelings change from moment to moment.
I still love you possum. :)

I don't have a problem with what you wrote, Tigerlily...
Geoff, let's know Tribe of Heart's views on free downloads when they contact you! Thanks!

I could never watch it. I tried just now, but broke down in the first 10 minutes. Those who are able to sit through the entire programme, my hats off to you.
There is no need for me to see this. I am already a vegan, and sensible enough to understand how mean and selfish mankind in general is.
I feel the same as you. I don't watch the documentaries on TV (I saw a few mins of 'slaughterhouse' by mistake :( ) because it's so upsetting and I'm vegan already.
However, I have seen 'Earthlings'. All the way through, although I had to look away many times. I hadn't realised QUITE how brutal and seemingly lacking in all sensitivity some people were.
I'm really glad that I watched it. I feel really * - there isn't a word really is there? I realise that I am far too tolerant of the meat eaters around me. My sister, for example, eats meat. She is good about me being vegan, so in return I thought I should respect her decision to eat meat. Of course I don't respect it, I just don't say the things that I know I could which would be upsetting for her. I think she should see this film - and I think I should stop keeping quiet.
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Docu "Earthlings"
I know what you mean Cherry.
I have just watched the entire 'earthlings', and it's not a happy watch. I have seen a lot of AR footage, and I have seen a lot of what is shown in this film. There is much I hadn't seen, but it didn't surprise me.
This might sound weird, but the reason I watch this kind of stuff, (and trust me, I have to force myself to-I don't enjoy it) is because I feel I owe it to every animal that loses it's life in a horrific act because of my species.
I feel responsible, and so many people are not accountable for this kind of action, I just want to shoulder a bit of the burden and maybe a little of the blame on behalf of millions of other people and I really don't want the animals of the world to think that I turn aside because it is too harrowing, after all, they can't It really is the least I can do.
It is harrowing, and I wish beyond all wishes that this would stop right now, but it won't, and while it goes on I see no reason to cover my eyes. Too many people do that for my liking anyway. (I mean heartless ignorant people, not tearful vegans;) ) It keeps me focused, strengthens my resolve, and above all, ensures that I know - really know my life and all that I do is as right as it can be. My conscience is clean.
*stops ranting and exhales deeply* :o
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Docu "Earthlings"
I watched it in full last night. I was suprised at how good the quality of it was in terms of res/fps/compression - we watched it on a standard 28" TV and it looked like a dvd.
I think it was excellent film and will recomend people watch it, however I think it could have gone further than it did. From a crtical standpoint I think the main problems with it is age of footage and country specific info. It is very much an american film targetted at american audiences. With not much extra I think it could have been more broad and shown footage from multiple countries, as it's easy for example for UK viewers to just dismiss it as being american and not the way things happen here. A lot of the footage was old and hence people could say outdated and no longer relevent. This is true across the AR movement, a lot of pics from the 70s and 80s are still being used and sometimes out of context (such as using photos from vivisection experiments which no longer take place to describe current practices). Certainly they tug on heartstrings, but don't actually stand up to analysis. There needs to be more facts from creditable sources - undercover footage is generally dismissed by people as being either staged or one off cases. I personally think it's better to show undercover footage then show an impartial well known expert talk through what has just been shown.
I think it was good to show all aspects of animal exploitation, but a unproportionate amount of time I feel was spent on entertainment. At the trade off of showing several minutes of footage of elephants in zoos there was little to no mention of laying hens, wool, silk etc.
It is a good film, but it's far from a 90 minute round trip of the reasons to be vegan.
Re: Amazing Animal Rights Docu "Earthlings"
I just got a reply from James LaVeck (Producer, Peaceable Kingdom and The Witness)
He says: 'While an activist who starts streaming our films online without our permission surely has the best of intentions, and will in the short term, reach a certain number of people not being reached right now, longer term, and in the larger view, what they're doing can quite easily become detrimental to our efforts. We are well aware of online streaming technology, and when we determine that doing so will do the most good for the cause, we will do it and do it right. Until then, we hope that people who care about animals will understand and respect our right to make decisions about the use of artwork we created.'
The above is an extract from a much longer email, which is worth reading in it's entirety but, I felt, a bit long to post. If anyone wants to read it, please PM me with an email address and I'll forward it.
Re: Earthlings and Libraries
interesting idea. next is getting people to seek it out.
just a thought...but i think its widely available on the (also widely available) internet these days...
Re: Earthlings and Libraries
but it's different when the film is sitting on the library shelf, free, begging to be checked out. the copy i have at my branch (where i work) has already been checked out several times. there are patrons who make a habit of checking out everything they see, and there are others that are addicted to documentaries. ultimately, if it ends up influencing the living and thinking habits of just one person, i'd say it's worthwhile.

Lately I've been questioning my own beliefs as to why I am vegan and starting have thoughts of being lacto-ovo. I just felt disillushioned with veganism and lost.
Although it's good to know the movie helped you regain your confidence in your veganism, it's sad to see you were becoming disillusioned.
You have friends here with whom you can discuss your disillusionment. No-one here would like to lose you, if you felt that way again!
Can you say what specifically you were feeling? It might help others. Veganism shouldn't be difficult, though I know for some it might be. If anything, I'm getting harder with my veganism now, less tolerant of omnivorism. I like to think I'm moving further into veganism.
Hope you're upbeat!

Hi David
Tigerlilly commented in 2006 and as she is still here I guess she is doing well! What happened was that I started a thread called 'distress and earthlings' and it was linked by admin to 'earthlings' which was started three years ago. It makes it look like it is all a new thread but it isn't, so please don't worry you are very kind!!
DUH! Just re-read your post and I noticed the word again in your sentence sorry!
