Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Howdy folks,
Many years ago I remember hearing about this weird pea protein "milk" from Plamil. They don't do it anymore, and as I never tasted it I was wondering if anyone remembered it (I'm sure someone will do) and could somehow describe the taste to me. I wonder if I could homebrew it :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I think I remember seeing it, but not tasting it. I've definitely had their mayo when it was pea protein based (it says now it has soya in, so I'm not sure if they still use peas as well?)
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I remember seeing it in 'The Vegan' mag, White Sun I think it was?? Never tasted it though so I can't help with that, sorry!
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Yep that's the one, here are the earlier and former packagings:

@ twinkle good point, yeah I do recall something about their mayo having pea protein too in it. I'm really curious about this. Actually, I know they even had a leaflet on pea protein, I wonder if anyone has this still?
edit: why do the images show up as links rather than images? the code is ok...
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Images showing up nicely now.
I think I actually bought some of this once but I don't remember consuming it so perhaps I didn't :o I also think I remember reading that it was pale green, so perhaps that put off people who wanted a substitute for dairy milk.
I would guess you could homebrew it; plenty of people make their own soy milk after all.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I eat their mayo often, and didn't know they used soy in place of pea protein. I must check the ingredients more often. Generally I do, almost to obsession!:o
Their mayo tastes more vinegary that before. Maybe hey have changed the recipe and not just replaced one . . .:hmm:
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Green colour? That's very interesting. I do have some dry split peas here, I might try coming up with something :D
(images do show up wit IE7, not with the fox though :( )
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I didn't remember it was pea protein but I do remember White Sun. I had it once and once was enough - it was pretty vile!
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
really... ? what did it taste like:confused:
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Used to have it on the cereals and it tasted ok to me. Didn't they used to produce a half litre concentrated pack too?
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I remember trying the White Sun and also remember trying another milk they had that was sweetned with apple juice (I think that was just soya though).
Someone told me that White Sun was creamy and really nice but that wasn't quite how I felt about it. I'm not really into soya milk on its own though so I might not be the best judge. :o
Didn't Plamil also do some shelf stable Alpro style desserts that were made of the same stuff? I seem to remember trying them as well.
You know when you try stuff just cause its vegan........yeah. :hmm::rollseyes_ani::umm_ani:
As 1gentlemorispirit hinted on earlier in this thread - Plamil still use pea protein in their mayonnaise.

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
found this:
"There are two varieties, one plain and the other mixed with apple juice. Both are packed in Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000ml B cartons."
http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2...6-28125701_ITM
On their website, apparently there is no list of ingredients, but it does say " a blend of sunflower oil & water with soya" so are you sure it still is made of peas?
The old mayo definetly had pea protein in it:
http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-...ise__315g.html
also, the old beverage was enriched with calcium, vitamins D2, B2 and B12.

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
do i remember it? yes
did i like it? no
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Ok folks, thanks for all your replies. It seems a lot of you didn't like it. Would it be possible to somehow describe the taste? Cheers.

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
As I remember, the pea milk tasted not unlike soya milk, but it was more watery than the soya milk we drank at that time (Provamel). Pea milk might sound weird, but people may think that 'milks' made from soya, rice, almonds, oats etc also sound weird.
Not pea milk but if you're a body builder wanting pea protein isolate, the following site may interest you:

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Hey you wouldn't happen to have the leaflet on pea protein from plamil? Since you've mentioned provamel at that time (I imagine anything from 15 to 10 years ago) did you recall if there was a carob provamel soy dessert? I think there one was but can't find any traces :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
There definitely was a carob flavour provamel. It was my favourite when I was little.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I bloody knew it!!! I remember it on my first year as a vegetarian / vegan, back in 97. What ever happened to it? Thanks for clarifying this, I have had this going around my head for a while now :D.
Unfortunatly I don't remember what it tasted like (or even having some for that matter)

Sorry Chico but I never had the pea protein leaflet.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Shame! I'd be keen on grabbing hold of that, as well as the leaflet (or small booklet) on vegan pregnancy and vegan children... i'm sure someone here is bound to have it :D
Hey veganchef do you also remember the small square tetra pak cartons the soya desserts used to came in? That was a classic :D what good memories :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Yes, I don't know why they changed the shape of the packaging for the chocolate flavour. I don't know what happened to the carob flavour, but I remember it not tasting at all like carob. In fact, I hadn't had carob before and when I did I was surprised because it tasted so different. I remember the carob flavour tasting sort-of like caramel. I found a different brand that do a caramel flavour soya dessert:

I don't think it's quite as good as the provamel one, but it's pretty good.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Got any pictures around from that time m8? Or a scan of some provamel advertisement from a magazine like "The Vegan" or whatever? It'd be so funny to see that again :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Seems like pea milk would be starchy? That is my problem that I find with most non-soy bean milks.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Hi, I didn't get you. I don't see what you mean by starchy.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Ooh, thats a hard one. Starchy like the water left over from cooked noodles.(?)
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I realise what starchy means, I just can't figure out any non-dairy beverage that I would vaguely think of as being starchy... besides pea is actually a pulse just like soya. So yeah, I don't really see what you mean.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I hope that I didn't come off as smart assed, keep in mind the type of people that I regularly have food discussions with:satisfied:
Soybeans have very little carbs and peas have LOTS. Of course, PPI (pea protein isolate) probably wouldn't have that problem :hmm: Guess I can't come off sounding but so smart assed:p
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
No worries m8 :D
Yeah right, peas are not as proteic as soya. That indeed might be an issue. Of course, that would be solved by using PPI, which is what Plamil used to use, but I don't see how I can get hold of any to make me own homebrew :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
You can buy pea protein in a place that has a wide variety of protein powders!
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
and you can make pea protein milk with that thing you reckon? I've never hung out in that sorta places, ya know :D
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I don't know which was worse the pea milk or Tiger Nut milk.... do they still make that???
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
They need to bring back the cool retro packaging!
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
"horchata de chufas" is a traditional and very popular beverage in Spain, most commercial ones aren't vegan (or even vegetarian) though. I didn't know it existed in the UK too, under that name.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
The recipe posted earlier seems pretty straight forward ;) I'd recommend a blender

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Must have dreamed it. Pea protein, sunflower oil and apple juice I was thinking
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I made some with soy protein applejuice and flaxseed oil the other day. Give it a good shake but its not bad.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
you mean soy protein isolate? concentrated apple juice?
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Yep, but I made the applejuice by the directions
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
okeydokey. What's "by the directions"?
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I used to drink White Sun regularly. It was fine in cereals; I can't remember if
I used it in coffee.
One friend reckoned it tasted too much of peas, though I hadn't noticed it.
Later on, after the chilled soya milks came on the market, I found I preferred those. However, I wish it was still available.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
^^
Neither me nor Mrs Lv remember it tasting like peas. Don't know why they discontinued it, tasted ok to me.

Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
I never bought it, but early in my time with Veggies it was being trialled at an event. It didn't go down well iirc. I had a quick taste of it in tea, it felt more like a new person initiation than anything I'd want to repeat! So that's possibly why it got withdrawn... :P Didn't they change a lot of recipes when they went organic and nut-free? Personally I miss the choc nut spread, and also remember some controversy over the removal of fortified soy milk from their inventory.
-
Re: Who remembers plamil's pea protein milk?
Actually, they discontinued it because of a problem with the pea protein isolate they used... :(
