Raw foods to avoid?
Not that I use Flare.com as a source of health information, but I did find this on their website about raw foods which should not be consumed, due to the fact that can block iodine absorbtion, which is bad for the thyroid.
Click on the link, and then scroll to the bottom of the page, to the paragraph about Goiterogenic Foods.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: Raw foods to avoid?
thought i'd just post that info;
WORST Goiterogenic Foods
Why? These foods can block your absorption of iodine, leading to hypothyroidism and/or goiter development
AVOID
• RAW cruciferous vegetables from the Brassica family, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips, kale, kohlrabi, cauliflower, bok choy, and rutabaga (when cooked or steamed, cruciferous vegetables loose their goiterogenic properties and are therefore safe to consume)
• Mustard seeds
• Peanuts
• Pine nuts
i've never heard anything like that! and it specfically capitalises the word RAW as opposed to cooked. when statements like that are made i'd like to know how the cooking initiates the changes, not just the heresay that it does.
and is it because it reacts with another mineral/vitamin/body enzyme etc??
interesting - thanks for the info there roxy! - no nibbling on that brocolli at work today then! ;)

Re: Raw foods to avoid?
Haha!
Well maybe it's only detrimental if the foods are eaten in large quantities. I know some people have kale every day though - so I wonder if that's having a negative effect?

Re: Raw foods to avoid?
it's one of those things that may only be investigated in the long term i think with proper trials.

Re: Raw foods to avoid?
We are all broccoli lovers here. The humans like it cooked or steamed and the rabbit and guinea pigs like it raw. :)

Re: Raw foods to avoid?
I've heard that raw broccoli blocks iodine absorption. It should be avoided in raw form when the person has a known thyroid problem, but not otherwise.
It's like caffeine blocking iron absorption. This doesn't mean it isn't absorbed, its just not absorbed as effectively.
I've also read that raw broccoli has many benefits -- antiulcer and antiviral properties. In addition, raw broccoli can help regulate insulin and blood sugar levels. I'd say its safe to eat raw. :)
