how long are you supposed to stop drinking fluids before bed? (ie. how many hours) because im ALWAYS waking up in the middle of the night to go to the washroom, and because of that, i cant get back to sleep!

depends on the person. I often carry on drinking up till when I go to sleep and don't have problems. You sound like you need a bladder transplant ;)Quote:

It's not deliberate, but I stop drinking fluids about a half hour before I leave work (5:00 pm). I don't have a water filter at home and so don't drink the water there. I chug it and tea all day long at work. I rarely have anything to drink with dinner. Sometimes I'll have a glass of wine afterwards or maybe some hot chocolate. The only time I really drink a lot before bed is if I'm not going to get a lot of sleep, I'm exhausted and need some sort of guarantee that I'll actually get out of bed on time in the morning.
I don't know if there's a set amount of time you have to wait b4 bed, but I usually try not to drink anything for at least an hour (usually 2).
well i know theres a set amount of time youre supposed to avoid liquids before bed i just cant remember what it was.

Limit liquids of any kind for at least 90 minutes before bedtime if the need to urinate wakes you up in the middle of the night. It takes about 90 minutes for the body to process liquids. This problem is especially common in older men.

Yes, it's about that - 90 minutes or 2 hours. I sometimes drink a cup of tea half an hour before bed. I've had two cups on occasion. I never have any problems. A clear conscience helps. Many problems are caused by having a guilty conscience.
I have to stop drinking at 7.oo p.m or I'm up and down all night :o
i usually pee right before i go to bed and i drink a couple sips of water and then in the morning im usually fine. But if i drink a LOT of water before bed, then i have to wake up in the middle of the night. So i'd say just drink only a teeny bit right before bed if youre going to. The time it takes for everyone to excrete their liquids is different bc we all have a different bladder size. But it sounds like your bladder is small like mine. Or maybe you have polyurea?
I used to be able to drink tea and coffee right up to bed time and still sleep all night, then it all suddenly changed. I think it might be stress and anxiety as I often wake up worrying about my uni exams.
hemlock, if you stop drinking around 7 pm, what time do you go to bed? (that would give a timeframe of how many hours you need to stop drinking fluids before bed) :)
catspajamas, its not like i have to pee all the time, but its just if i drink fluids before bed then i pee a couple of times during the night. so im just wondering the kindof time frame i need, which i assume is about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
I usualy drink a glass of water before bed when i have to get up early.
It helps me get out of bed in the morning:D
Have you checked you selenium levels? The soil is poor in selenium in many areas, and AFAIK, selenium is linked to the bladder function...Quote:

I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to mention that it is better to drink before bed and wake up to pee than wake up dehydrated in the morning.
I always get really thirsty before bed and end up drinking a few pints (eek!). Then, I wake up about 5 hours later to pee. I always drink a lot when I wake up too.
But, if you really want to, I would say 2 or 3 hours is a good timeframe to not drink before bed. And before that limit it to maybe a pint in the evening. And avoid caffeine earlier in the evening as it is a diuretic.
