I am kind of disappointed really with what is on offer.I went to 8th day(with my sister who nicely offered to go after Earth cafe) was shut) and I had dhal with a slice of cheesecake-nearly £8.The dhal at £4.30 was small, but tasty.I had a ratatouille at Earth cafe a few months ago,but didn't think a lot of it.I have had some things at the Tampopo places, but again small portions/chilli-why must everything have chilli? The Greenhouse was good for filling me up once .Though after looking, most is fake meat that I can order at odd times/curry/spices or mexican things-avocado/peppers etc. Am I too picky? It just seems there is so much for others, pub food etc. I find I crave that.Like a birthday last year in a pub,I got chips and salad, though I guess I got something.
I can only agree Happy. Being vegan in manchester it SEEMS as if it'd be good and there's lots of choice but actually i don't think the options are that great. The Odd/Odder bars are worth checking out even though they're not fully vegetarian/vegan they do some really nice vegan food, lots of options and mark it on the menu. Odd is literally round the corner from earth and Odder's oppositeish 8th day. Also for a completely indulgetn ridiculously unhealthy treat the milkshake bar in the Arndale market now has soya milk and icecream so you can get any of the vegan things on their menu (eg GINGERNUTS!) blended into a yummy milkshake :) (like shakeaway if you know that chain at all). The one in afflecks has a couple of vegan ones too actually. Oklahoma do some nice vegan milkshakes and great soya lattes although the food selection isn't as great for vegans.Still at least there is a choice i guess!
The best thing about Manchester's poor offerings for vegans has to be unicorn grocery.just wish it was in the centre of town though!
Yeah,I've only been to Oklahoma once,I had an apple and cinammon milkshake-really bad,I don't think much of them either. Many places are good for drinks and cakes though, but I didn't really like Erth's too dry,oh well:lol:.The Odder bar's menu looks good,I found the place on Street View. Thanks for the recommendation.
Hi@all Mancs, I've got a question: Are there any events such as vegan "welfare kitchens" or "soup kitchens"* in Manchester? Here in Germany, we have something like that in several cities, normally organized by vegan people with left-wing tendencies. :) Everyone brings vegan food to it and the ones who do not bring something donate a small amount of money, sometimes it's even free for everyone. I would really love to take part in one of that when I have moved to Manchester!
*in German it's "Volksküche" = "kitchen for the people"
is mod pop cafe still open as on one website it says its closed, Im coming to manchester this sunday and staying at the travellodge ancoats and thought this was close enough for a quick bite to eat before going to sonic boom six gig at academy/uni.
if this is not open any one know any thing local to travel lodge or academy .eg walking distance that will be open on a sunday.
You could try Odder bar on oxford street - they always have vegan food.

Open til midnight, too, so you could eat afterwards if you wished.

Hey everybody, can anyone give me some advice of how to find vegan people for a shared flat in the Greater Manchester area? Or does anyone know someone who is searching for a vegan flatmate? I'll study in Manchester (at MMU) from September 2010 to January 2011 and I do not want to live in an omnivorious household; but a vegetarian flat would be okay, too. I'm 28 years old, of course vegan, female, married, and from Germany. I have posted ads on Gumtree and VegCom, but unfortunately noone answered. :hmm:
Any ideas?
Hi are you in Manchester at the moment or going to be visiting again before you move? If so i would suggest putting a paper advert in Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton or one on the notice board at Eighth Day Cafe on Oxford Rd, not sure what else to suggest others may have some ideas though, good luck with it
No, unfortunately I will not be there until September - but thanks for your suggestions! :) I found some veggies in Manchester who are so kind to have a look at the notice boards and they will email me if they see something appropriate.
Perhaps the veggie friends could stick up a "wanted" notice for you aswell Vegandrea?
Where are all the Manchester vegans? i never ever meet any other vegans in manchester and this thread seems pretty quiet :(.does anyone know of any good vegan/veggie groups in the area? Or would anyone be interested in arranging some sort of meetup?
i find it hard not knowing other vegans and it would be great to meet some people who don't think i'm rather weird for being vegan!
A veggie pub in Manchester?
yarp.

Take my word for it - I've had his food (at the old Mod Pop Cafe) and it is pretty damn good.
Nice one! :D
I'll be up in Bolton for a few days in July, might give this a try.
me too. I'll be trying it out in a few weeks Well, I already know the food is good (had a breakfast and cake when chef was at Mod Pop), so I am hoping for the same!
I'm going on the 18th July for a few days, not too sure how long yet, probably until Thursday.
I never got to try mod pop so I'm rather looking forward to it. I tried earth café in northern quarter and it was ok but my mum's food was tepid and other than that I tend to either end up eating in nandos or somewhere or getting a tofu and rice box from somewhere.
Hi, I'm staying in Manchester for a few days in just over a week, Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get a vegan curry, takeaway, cheaper the better. We're staying in the city centre, not far the arena but willing to walk around to get something nice. Thanks!
The Thirsty Scholar is veggie?!
I can't wait to try it out.
:)
Rusholme is the curry quarter, but not necessarily the best curry.
I've had this place highly recommended to me and it's in the centre:
This and That

Curry Cafe. Cheap, tasty, friendly. Three curries and rice for £3. Can't recommend it enough.
3 Soap Street, in northern quarter, behind Arndale, down a little lane. Half the fun is finding it!
Tel: 0161 832 4971
This is also a good page.

Finally, go to Ning, right at the end of Oldham Street as you walk from Piccadilly Gardens. Shouldn't be too hard to find if you're staying anywhere in the centre. Thai food, not vegetarian but plenty of vegan options and all labelled as such. Hands down the best restaurant in Manchester for atmosphere/quality/value for money.
Ooh never been to ning before sounds good!:) veggie heaven site needs updating though, v2go has been gone ages from the arndale, not sure if the trafford centre one is still there though.
I'm yet to have food at thirsty scholar, i was meant to go recently but football was on in there and didnt fancy that! haha, just next door though is the salisbury my fave pub ever best rock/metal pub in town no grub there though...
Thanks MarkAnthony! Will check them out. Thai sounds nice for a change too. I'm also getting a takeaway from tompopo one day so hope its nice, though I'l be tired in the evenings so wont really care as long as its vegan! Thanks again.
tampopo have been pretty good when I've been
I was up in Manc this past weekend. Earth cafe was better than ever - prices seem more affordable (perhaps it's London that's made me think that?), and the food quality/portion size was great.
Also popped into Cocoa Emporium in Affleck's Palace and got some cupcakes (£1.50 each or 4 for £5). We chose chocolate cheesecake, lime, and chocolate chilli. Very nice cakes, affordable, centrally-located and also had a selection of booja-booja truffles and valrhona couveture chocolate in varying intensities. Definitely recommended.
Vegan cupcakes in central Manchester? Good to know about, thanks!
Just incase you ever need emergency cupcakes?
When staying with my brother up there I always need cupcakes!
Jo has a replacement me now :-(
An alternative supplier of tasty food?
Just moved to Manchester and it looks pretty good, especially Unicorn. I can't believe the organic veg prices after living in Brighton! Also seems there are a few south-east Asian restaurants that are vegan friendly. I will report back. Also interested in some kind of social if anyone else is?
Unicorn is great, they sell many things I've never seen in Brighton or London. My little brother and sister live almost opposite.

A vegan cupcake from the Sweet Tooth Cupcakery, next door to Cafe Pop in the Northern Quarter (Pop don't have the cafe in the basement anymore) and there is another branch in Chortlon). I think they only have one vegan flavour a day but it was very nice. They also do soya drinks.

One of my favourite places to eat when I visit is Laughing Buddha in Didsbury although I didn't get there on my latest visit last weekend.
Not food related but Bags Of Flavor on Tib Street have really nice bags made from old kids curtains, duvets etc. I've got Superman, Spiderman and this Seasme Street bags from there. :) (Those not in Manchester can buy online now.)

I'm sure most of you Manchester folks are aware of the cake inspired meetups now taking place every 2 months. I believe the next meeting is in March so a while yet but worth a visit; the weekend's event was a heavenly vision in cake.....

Hi Mango, I'm a bit late with a reply but hope you're enjoying Manchester - have you found any favourite restaurants yet? I don't know if you're aware but the Manchester Vegan Group meet once a month (I think). I haven't been yet either but keep meaning to! Link here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/manchester-vegan-society/
Sorry if you're already way ahead :)
Hi folks,
I'd just like to recommend this veggie bistro/restaurant in Manchester city centre. The venue's already established and has been serving meat & veggie options in the daytime for a while now. But the owner's ambition is for it to be a fully veggie/vegan eaterie and he now has a fully veggie/vegan menu for the evenings & weekends. My boyfriend & I went for an anniversary dinner last week and it was lovely - having 3 choices at each course was a treat in itself for me.
Anyway, perhaps for special occasions only, though there are some very reasonable deals on the website: http://www.detoxretox.co.uk/
I'm dying to try out the Sunday lunch!

Thanks for the info fdq. Glad someone else has discovered Laughing Buddha too! :)
