Cold sores are a very common problem caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
But there might still be some things you could do to prevent the cold sores from appearing as frequently? I used to get them quite a lot on my mouth when I was younger but I haven't had one for ages now, famous last words.
ETA this page http://www.herpes.com/Treatment.shtml references a couple of studies suggesting lysine might indeed help.
They seem to appear when you are under stress, which is why they often appear just before you get a cold...at that time your immune system is extra stressed.
herbwormwood is totally correct about coldsores -a type of herpes virus- appearing when your body is under stress or your immune system is not up to par. I used to get cold sores about twice a year. Surprisingly, I very rarely get them since becoming began.
I take lysine tablets when I get a sore. Lysine boosts your immune system and arginine feeds cold sores somehow. Lysine overpowers the arginine and keeps it from feeding your cold sore is my understanding, in addition to improving your immune system. I've seen arginine (naturally found high in nuts and seeds)tablets so I'm sure they have their place as well, I want to say with heart health and vitality/libido.
Thanks Haniska, Herby, Harpy & Sponge for your answers. I'll look into this lysine next time I'm at the natural foods store.
