  1. Re: Nearly 19000 animals killed pr. minute in USA alone

True, yet even with kosher slaughter there is still some pain. What can we do, humans have evolved to be omnivores even though currently eating meat has been stigmatized. The human dilemma is a...

Re: What did you eat today? (13)

I consumed peas, pasta and a pear. It was a day of food that started with the letter P.
  3. Poll: Re: "Pets" - Which of these statements do you agree with?

Unless we stop the notion of captivating an animal for a 'pet' there will always be a vicious cycle of pet breeding and dumping to a shelter as well as a continuation of supporting parasitic...
  4. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

What happens to the pet when you go out to work for 8 hours? In essence, pets are prisoners. If you leave a dog for 8 hours or more unrestricted then you are living in unsanitary conditions. Dogs...
  5. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Well said Andy and I agree, 100%
  6. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

I think that Genesis 1:29 has more clarity than the idea of animal sacrifices and leather garb. Any Talmudic interpretation of the following?

Again I repeat: Torah verse below indicates, G-d's...
  7. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I don't think that you understand the idea of horse ownership. They need to be exercised. Just going around and around on a lunge line is not enough and not great for their feet. If left alone while...
  8. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

That's great to hear. The one I had probably never had a saddle on her before I adopted her for she was a sulky racer. I used a kimberwick bit for she liked to ride but she sensed if you were a real...
  9. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

It's a shame that dogs such as greyhounds are used to entertain the mindless cigar smoking, alchohol drinking gambler type of human being. I know I'm stereotyping but the point I'm making is the...
  10. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I hear you and appreciate your sincerity. Perhaps its a little different in the states. The dogs that I adopted were from the same shelter and today the shelter has the same problem as they always...
  11. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Perhaps, human nature needs to embelish to justify a position. When did I say close all the shelters? I think some are taking a journalistic license here. What has to happen is that shelters only be...
  12. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

One cannot ignore that a shelter does complete the pet breeding-dumping cycle as harsh as it may appear, shelters paradoxically with all the good and kindheartered intentions do provide a way for...
  13. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

    Sandra

Of course I would help any animal that is in pain. I believe I stated to that effect in one of my above posts. I see shelters as sort of a double edge sword in that they inadvertantly...
  14. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Nice analogy and I appreciate the courage you have to express independent thoughts and not thirst for a typical provincial 'goodie two shoes' pat on the head. Alot of the responses seems to be fueled...
  15. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I'm the last person to advocate irresponsible parenting. Single teenage mothers are an albatross around society's neck.
  16. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I think that you have the wrong impression of me. I had a Doberman (adopted) for 12 years and Boston Terrier (adopted) for 10 years. I am a dog lover. I see however, society's obsession with 'pets'...
  17. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Remember the biggest word in your last post was "unwanted". Pets are a want and not a need, so why should society as a whole cater to this whim that some have. Why should we live with remnants of dog...
  18. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

No fault placed with the shelters. It's being part of an easy cycle that inadvertantly encourages (instead of discourages) pet dumping. If owner's did not have a dumping ground then I'm sure there...
  19. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Well, its kind of like the chicken or the egg dilemma. As long as there is an relatively easy way out for these mindless adolescent mentality types, then the shelters will be used for that purpose. ...
  20. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I'm certainly not implying that we eradicate shelters. I'm suggesting that shelters be extremely more selective about who gets to give up their pet to a shelter. This is what I'm angry about. The...
  21. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I commend you on having such a caring character, yet we still have to realize that the shelters are also a dumping ground for the primadonas of the world who change their mind about a pet as often as...
  22. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

There are many connections that can be made between the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and vegetarianism:

On Yom Kippur, Jews pray to a "compassionate G-d", who compassionately remembers His...
  23. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Thanks so much for this information. shalomveg.com is a great web site and can enlighten some of those here. A great article to read is 'Animal slavery and the Holocaust".
  24. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Pie, sounds like you have a very nice lifestyle.

Cobweb, well the buck has to stop somewhere for its a continual cycle of breeding and dumping to a shelter. I don't know all the answers but I...
  25. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Many thanks for interjecting this information as it is becoming more common to find vegans as Cantors and Rabbis
  26. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Have you been to the big apple lately? Quite common and in the cold months many migrate to south florida so you have that life style there also. I'm referring to an orthodox and observant crowd.
  27. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

I've been to a few vegan Pesach seders and have had many at home. You can substitute out a shank bone and egg on the seder plate.

Unleavened bread has no conflict with veganism during the holidays
  28. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Interesting responses. Kosher dietary laws have humane reasons as the purpose for separation of dairy and meat. This overriding influence naturally compels one toward veganism as an extension of the...
  29. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

    Hi Leeds,

I hear yeh and for the most part it is a poor man's vodka believing in a supreme being dispensing justice. I was only connecting my interpretation of kosher & veganism. Beside those two...
  30. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

It's okay, let's just forget about it. It's no big deal.
  31. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Help Battery Hens - Hi, I don't mean to offend you either but I found your post to be 'out there where the buses don't run'. What did you rescue the hens from? a couple of chauvinistic and abusive...
  32. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Agree, 100% and I think we are on the same wave length. Nice to know someone who feels the same way about these issues and observations:cool:.
  33. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I don't think anyone is getting personal. I think for the most part its a great discussion we are having here as we all truly care about animals.
  34. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

 Yep, that's true. well, at least you know that I'm no yankee.
  35. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

With microchipping it would be extremely hard to just dump animals somewhere. The owners can be traced. Annual taxes provide a disincentive to pet ownership and also another way to track animals. As...
  36. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I think that some are embelishing the posts I made. The answer lies in stopping the demand for pets. I know that's not going to make most feel warm and fuzzy. One way is make the purchasing of a pet...
  37. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

Thanks for making a excellent point and yes this is a quagmire. I would say that a street would be an unnatural place for them to be to begin with, why not then intercede when these 'impressed with...
  38. Re: Is the idea of kosher really a road to veganism?

Leeds, I hear you and the last thing you'll ever get from me is any form of prosylitizing. I was just expressing the connection of a kosher life style to veganism.
  39. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

I truly believe that animals can live without man's intervention. In fact, I feel that man's intervention into their lives is the biggest threat to their existence. This pet idea is the same...
  40. Re: Does man really need to possess pets or can we just leave the animals alone?

It's easy to catagorize and pigeon hole anyone into a nice neat box. I'm just myself and really do not assimilate to any political forum or venue. I don't think we need to be classified, rubber...
