Ok - well I might be showing my age here, but I've never heard of any of those, except Ben Lee and Missy Higgins, who you told me about in another thread the other night. Or maybe I've just been away from home for too long

    Anyway, I like:

Paul Kelly (saw him live here in Vancouver a couple of years ago)
    Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel
INXS (old school Michael Hutchence stuff)
I used to like Kate Ceberano - What ever happened to her?
    Wendy Matthews
    Powderfinger

That's all I can think of right now.

Can someone recommend a good Aussie female singer-songwriter? Because when I was in Oz I have to admit I found the music pretty dreadful. I liked Deadstar, I guess they were the only ones.

John Butler is a GOD! I can listen to his music for an entire weekend, not only is he a magician on the guitar, his politics are really inspiring.
I can't believe nobody's mentioned Xavier Rudd yet, he's an incredibly talented local muso and another hard-working indie performer. I can't count the number of instruments he plays, and I love the way he incorporates indigenous Aussie sounds. He kinda reminds me of an Aussie Ben Harper.
As for music from other parts, Ani di Franco and Mazzy Star get regular gigs on my ipod.

fiamma: check out Sarah Blasko. She's my favourite aussie artist. Although I think she was actually born in South Africa.

Is he new? I haven't lived in Australia for 4 years, and I don't recall hearing his name before.

Are Savage Garden still around? Oh that's right - they split up didn't they. Did they go on to have solo careers? "I wanna stand with you on a mountain......"

Yeh Xavier is pretty newish, probably around the last year or 2, Savage garden havn't done anything since geez, late 90's I'm guessing, Darren Hayes the lead vocalist went on to have a solo career but he's stuff is pretty bad IMO, haha, i'm just remembering my Friday night we were playing singstar and singing "to the moon and back" I love old savage!!

John Butler is a dual national, Aussie and American - he has both passports. He came to Australia when he was a teenager, I think, and his wife Danielle is Australian born. I've heard him say that he hates having an American accent because people judge him like they would judge George Dubya, which is completely unfair. I sure wouldn't want to be judged for what Johnny H says and does.
I don't know anyone more passionate about saving Tassie forests than John Butler, except maybe Bob Brown. Either one could deserve Australian of the Year if you ask me.

I'm actually listening to Bluebottle Kiss at the moment. One of the best Australian bands.

Not enough You Am I respect in here. Tim Rogers is great. Definitely a special songwriter. Tim Rogers and the Temperance union is another great band of his. He's releasing an album and touring with Tex Perkins now. That should be really cool.

On the John Butler topic, his music is extremely good. He's a great songwriter and guitarist. But I was somewhat sad... well a better word would disappointed, when I found out that he's not even vegetarian. I heard in made jokes about not being a vegetarian. He wants to save the trees but not the animals? That baffles me. To me they go hand in hand. Anyway, his music is still really good. And I think he actually came to Australia from California when he was around 6 - he used to get picked on at school for having an american accent or something he said.

It's a little bit gothy (but not too much) and a little bit like PJ Harvey.

You can have a listen on their website:

    Thread resurrection!

Sorry, I'm a new Aussie here and love music.

I agree with y'all; Mr Butler = god.

Don't mind a bit of Pete Murray, Regurgitator, Frenzal Rhomb... but I'm mainly into heavy metal, so I'm fans of many bands that I guess you could consider 'underground' or whatever it is that unknown/ un mainstream bands are called.

EDIT: Oh, and how could I forget Silverchair?! Daniel Johns has always been someone I looked up to and related to, especially as a teen.

And yup, 28 days = Aussie, have 2 of their cds and haven't listened to them in ages.

I only used to like Frogstomp and Freak Show from Silverchair but their new stuff grew on me after seeing them live w/ Powderfinger. Srsly great gig.

I saw Ben Folds live last night. Turns out my earlier post was completely and utterly wrong; he's not Australian at all. Somehow I'd got it into my head he was from Adelaide.

No idea how I got that in my mind, as it seems he's American through and through. I mean, the clue is in the songs he writes and his accent, I guess.

    I am a moron.

I recently saw Ned Collette and Snowman recently. Ned Collette was pretty good (he was who I went to see); Snowman were dire. The recordings they've got up don't do justice to the sonic assault that is their live performance. I did ask the girl on the merch stall what the idea was with booking them both on the same bill - "They're both Australian."
