I keep meaning to go to Totnes, whenever we drive through it we don't have time to stop. Must try this summer.

Perhaps we should have a big Totnes meet-up

@ BellaRuns - viewing Google maps, it looks like it must be The Barrel House? Although searching that and vegan is not proving very fruitful (heh). Perhaps they change the menu from time to time and I was just lucky?

I'm reassured that Brighton is coming out so high. I might be moving there in a few months, if my boyfriend gets the job he's applying for. If he does I'm looking forward to trying out some veggie eateries there!

I live in durham and it's not that great on the vegan front. There was a little veggie restaurant but it closed.

I try to travel to the UK as often as I can because I simply love the vegan friendliness, the culture, the arts, the language, the people, the shopping (for food - I can spend hours in a Sainsbury's or Marks & Spencer) etc etc etc.

I've been to London many times and the variety for vegan food there is amazing. Brighton would be no.2, I hope to go back there next month. Edinburgh, an amazing city, was quite good in terms of vegan food too. Sadly Birmingham was a disappointment. I LOVED the Warehouse cafe there, but that was the only place I could go to.

Next year I hope to go to Bristol (for the veg festival!), Bath and of course London again.

Hi guys! I was wondering if you could help me out a little...

I'm planning to study in the UK next year (either Edinburgh or Oxford) and I really can't decide! I know that Edinburgh's awesome, but what about Oxford? Any college-aged people out there from Oxford? What about prices on food (on groceries since I don't really eat out that much... too expensive >_<)
Why kill when you have the choice to avoid it?

I dont know who voted Portsmouth, but it is TERRIBLE round here There is only one place I know of that sells any Vegan meals, which is a cafe called Smile in Southsea (they do an amazing Vegan breakfast!) I tried to have an adapted meal from a place called Capers in Southsea (who took over what was the Greenhouse Kitchen which was Veggie and Vegan, and reintroduced meat to the menu) and it arrived smothered in butter There are no specifically Vegetarian or Vegan places to eat out around here

Hi sigen92 - only just saw your message. There are sometimes people from Oxford on the forum but I don't know if they are around at the moment. There should be the odd thread if you search though, and there's also this http://www.oxveg.co.uk/

Not sure if there's much variation between grocery prices in Edinburgh and Oxford - both are fairly affluent places. Both are pleasant cities to live and study, too. (Not being much help - sorry!)

Does Brighton have an exclusively vegan restaurant (apart from Loving Hut) that's open all year round now? I've travelled as a vegan to pretty much all of the major cities in the UK, and Glasgow is without a doubt best for vegans (after London of course!).

There is VBites (http://www.vbites.com) but this a little way out of town, and more of a cafe. There are vegetarian restaurants which offer plenty of vegan options though (Food for Friends, Terre a Terre).

Yeah I walked over there before Vegfest earlier in the year but it was closed. Thousands of vegans in town and they were closed. Bad move!

Just wondering why Cornwall is on the list. It's a county not a town/city so you're not really comparing like with like. Having lived there I think it's ok for vegans but if you live in St Just it doesn't really matter if St Austell is great you aren't going there for a meal.

And It's the only Welsh place listed! I must say, Carmarthen is much better than it was 7 years ago, but I don't really have anywhere to compare it to, not having lived elsewhere as a vegan, or travelled a great deal!

I come from Brighton, lived in Portsmouth & currently live in Southampton, and Brighton is unquestionably the easiest place of the 3 to be vegan (although both Pompey and Soton are improving)

Unhappy Re: the best place to be vegan in the UK

I think Huddersfield has to be the worst.... The big shopping places have a few things in but not much.... and only 2 specialised places in my town ( both more health shops than specialised vegan shops)
