A lot of them contain egg, either in the filling or as an ingredient in the wrapping. Mr Flibble is right - you should check with each restaurant because they are all different.

Even those without egg may have animal based stocks used for cooking the vegetables inside.

Spring rolls are easy and, in my opinion, fun to make.

Spring roll wrappers are usually rice-based, while eggroll wrappers are egg-based. However, as the cuisine gets adapted for Western audiences, often the wrappers are interchanged or given additional ingredients. Blah.

I'm afraid I don't have a recipe, but you can make the fresh spring rolls with the clearish rice wrapping (Vietnamese banh trang, I think they're called) with any ingredients you like I like to fill the wrappings with fresh shredded veggies and TVP or tofu bits and dip in peanut sauce.

Hi tina, I'll try that, although last weekend I asked a new restaurant just opened here, what was in their vegetable samosas? The reply was 'I don't know my mother makes them', I think it must be an old family recipe and he didn't want to share it with me. I don't have much luck with restaurants, but I'll give it a go with the spring rolls!

Somebody had a good idea in another thread a while ago. If you want to use the "allergy" option, just say that you are unable to digest any animal proteins.

    yes, indeed you are, tigerlilly!

so, in the uk, you can get spring rolls by biona from health food stores, one variety is vegan, one isn't. very tasty, but best hot (though you can eat them straight from the pack, too).

the oriental food market in our town sells frozen spring roll wrappers that aren't the spongy rice sort that are vegan. i'll pop over this week and find out what the brand is, if they're still stocking them.

you can make something similar tigerlily but not quite the same. you use rice paper to roll the stuff in and i think you can deep fry it also. look up japanese salad rolls or rice paper rolls on google.

ETA this was also meant for witchy regarding the rice question.

its usually in the 'asian' part of the grocery store. the part that has rice crackers and wasabi and whatnot. its a plastic round disc container and it has hard rice papers in it. (i dont know if your grocery store has an asian part but it might) all you do to rehydrate them is soak them in water for a few minutes and then take them out and dry them a bit. theyre very fragile so you want to be very careful when working with them.

I had some gorgeous spring rolls in America - the roll was actually made out of soy milk skin and the filling was veggies and tofu. Absolutely delicious.

Blue Dragon make rice paper pancakes that I use to make spring rolls. They even give instructions on the box. They seem to be pretty easily available- my local Morrisons stocks them, and they're pretty cheap- 99p???

I have been lucky in that to date I have only found supermarket and western places whose spring rolls aren't vegan, all of the thai chineese and other oriental takeaways I have frequented have been vegan and have fried them with the chips and a few other vegan products only, they cook the fish and dairy products seperately (sometimes with the meat sometimes not (i.e. 2, 3 or 4+fryers high pressure and otherwise) but this must be checked in every case and you should check regularly at places you already know as places do change their arrangements from time to time. A local chippy used to fry the chips in one fryer and everything else in a high pressure fryer but now everything goes in the same one

I like making Vietnamese spring rolls, the kind that are not deep fried, just the ingredients wrapped in a steamed rice wrap, Blue Dragon make rice wraps you can soak in boiled water and use right away.

They are great dipped in peanut sauce.

    Here's a recipe: http://runawaypenguin.blogspot.com/2...ing-rolls.html

I don't tend to use that much tofu though, if I even use any at all. I quite often just use bean sprouts and various vegetables lightly stir fried.

We've been buying big boxes of frozen mini spring rolls from the Chinese supermarket. You're supposed to deep fry them, but the do fine in the oven with a drizzle of oil.

Also been getting the Asda frozen ones. They had them on special, 5 packs of 4 for £4. Seem to have run out in our Asda now, though
