Default Chilli made with Bulger Wheat

Do many people use bulger wheat in recipes and if so what kind of taste does it have ?
I've got a recipe for chilli made with bulger wheat from my new "Easy Vegan" cookbook and thought I'd give it a go, but was just wondering how other people found it as an ingredient.

    Thumbs up

I have that book and would be happy to give you my verdict on any of the recipies I have tried and tested from it
The chilli recipie you mention is probably the one I use most frequently but as well as the teaspoon of mild chilli powder I also add a little extra garlic,a little extra cumin and a sprinkle of oreagano,a level teaspoon of salt and last but by no means least 2 tablespoons of tomato puree.
It recommends adding water and I have done it so many times I do it my eye, lol, but it amounts to a little over half a pint, you can add a little more later if needed.
That recipie is ultra delicious with a huge side salad and vegan mayonnaise

If you are using canned red kidney beans,be sure to rinse them well first.

My mom makes this delicious Middle Eastern dish with tomatoes, bulgur, and chickpeas all cooked together. I'll ask her (when she comes home) for the measurments and what to do...I'll post it!

I recently received the Easy Vegan cook book from my sister (who rushed out to by any vegan book to cook me *something* the other week).

Was wondering about either the Bulgur wheat chilli or the chick pea curry!

See, my gf isn't vegan (yet ) but does like vegan food. However, she has wheat and sugar problems (very tired after eating it), so wanted to try the bulgur wheat instead of the soya mince (which usually has wheat in it).

How did you get on with it, VeganMum?

Huh, how come bulgur wheat doesn't have wheat but soy mince has???

I buy most of my staples from a Turkish grocery and use bulgur a lot.

It doesn't have much taste itself but takes on the flavour of anything it's cooked with. I also use it as a side like rice, quinoa, millet etc.

My fave bulgur recipe is also an extremely junk food recipe- I soak the bulgur in vegetable broth, in a pan, saute some chopped onions, garlic and carrots in olive oil and add the bulgur. It's eaten with salt, pepper, ketchup and mustard.

The recipe is easy, fast and feeds a lot of people, and everyone has loved it so far.

I also used to make some croquettes with bulgur, red lentils, spring onions and tomatoes, must look for the recipe!

No. But I have asked my mom for other recipes and she's always like, "I don't know. I just cook it, I don't use recipes."

    So I don't a recipe, sorry.

Tabouli is indeed made with bulgur in some areas I use it when I don't have couscous at hand.

It's nothing like tabooli what so ever. The stuff I was talking about is cooked all together and does not contain any parsley.

Yeah I'm not sure why you would use bulger. It IS wheat. Definitely not wheat free.

Turkish cuisine uses a lot of bulgar as a staple... when I'm running low on food supplies, I like to fry up some bulgar (soaked in veggie broth) with carrots, onion and garlic and have it with mustard and ketchup.
    very unorthodox, but tasty!
