    Default carpets

I will soon be needing to buy some carpet for a bedroom. The last time I bought carpet, I had a wool mix one. Obviously I don't want wool now. Has anyone bought an alternative recently and if so, is it nice, hard-wearing, etc?

I'm going to look around the shops soon but any thoughts are welcome

I've had synthetic carpets from places like Carpet Right as well as more expensive and interesting textured ones from Christy's Carpets and other companies.

I've not really had any problems with them but they have only been down for about 2 years.

The underlay can make all the difference. I got some nice Cloud 9 underlay delivered directly to me and got the Carpet Right fitters to fit that underneath (the carpet shops really overcharge for underlay - I can pm you the website I ordered the underlay from if you like).

Don't go too mad with the underlaythough - I made the misake of using a really thick one in one room - now if I put anything on that carpet I'm left with permanent dents!

ETA Some synthetic carpets can be quite static as well!

does it have to be carpet? My granny used to have some sort of rush matting which was smooth and comfy on the feet, warm, smelt nice and seemed to last for years. I think you can get a variety of that kind of thing from Fired Earth.

No, it doesn't necessarily have to be carpet. That sounds expensive though, Twinkle! I will have a look though as I think I have their catalogue.

Good point about the underlay, Marrers. Yes, please can you PM me the details when you have time? No rush.

Fired Earth is expensive, yes - I remember drooling over their tiles and things at a shop in St Albans.

My granny got her matting years ago (before I was born) - not sure where she got it from, but I guess there must be other outlets that may be less dear if Fired Earth is overly pricey.

Ahhhh - tell me about it! Aren't they BEAUTIFUL! Alas, on our tiles budget, we could only afford about 8 tiles
