Default In search of a decent pub in Brighton

Well, I've got to organise my leaving do at the paper...

Does anyone know of a pub where I can get a 'few' people in (considering I know most people at the paper, including the editor and his deputy to talk to on first name terms), that might do a snacky selection?

Have you heard of "The George"? It's gotten many good reviews as being one of the best vegan-friendly pubs. From what I remember, it's mostly vegan, and many--if not all--of it's dishes can be easily veganised.

    Here's its contact information:

    The George
5 Trafalgar St, East Sussex, UK

    Telephone number: 01273-681055

Not been there myself, but there's quite a few bad reviews for the george on the net.

After being fed cheese in redveg (despite specifying the word vegan to the lady at least 4 times) I'm not sure brighton is as vegan friendly as I was once led to believe.

That's a shame about people's bad experiences in the George. I've been there a few times and found it OK although the service is admittedly cr@p particularly when it comes to serving food to a group when the pub is busy.

I recently noticed another pub near there that seemed to be advertising itself as vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly - think it was at the start of Gardiner St, before you get to the shoe shop.

Me and Hemlock have been to the George a few times... OK... but there have been a lot of bad reviews on here as well (one from me).

Also, I don't think it can handle a group of people like the average argus leaving do.

I apologize for my false perception. I haven't been there myself, so I'm especially sorry for that.

    Don't worry about it.

The George should be a good thing for the Veg*n community, and it's a real shame it's gone so far downhill over the last year. Hopefully the refit will put these things right.

Like Sam says... don't worry about it!

I think the refit might be too late for me

And part of the unsuitabilty of The George is the layout, not ideal for what Corum needs - which you wouldn't know unless you've been! Maybe you'll go there one day Pisces, if the refit brings it back up to standard!

Do you think this thread would be better in the 'Brighton' section Corum? More likely to get some local knowledge.

Have you considered Sidewinder in Kemptown? It is quite spacious. They had a new chef starting recently so check what the menu is like now but they did say they were hoping to do a bit more for vegans.

On a different tack what about the Hanbury ballroom? Not sure if you are thinking of spending anything but I think you can hire it out.

You can't anymore Marrers, it's now a private members club owned by some nobby types and you have to be an a-list type to get in there (obviously people like Kevin Rowland and Zoe Ball!!!!) All the rest of us plebs who went there for gigs have to find somewhere else now.

Never been to Sidewinder - Hemlock's son lives in Kemptown so I'll get him to give us the heads-up!

I didn't really want it to get lost in the Brighton thread really as it's become more... urgent shall we say!

I know but I think you can still hire it - maybe you have to be a member but ordinary folk can be members I think. I was enquiring about it recently to find out how well they can cater for vegans (it's owned by the Blanch House people).

Hmmm. Might be worth a thought (might have to use The Argus blag though - I'll talk to their rep on Monday, as I often sort out their ads).

Did you have you do yet?

Sidewinder seem to have got worse on the vegan food front but could probably do something with notice.

It's been a long time since this thread was active (two and a half years to be precise) and in the meantime The Earth & Stars (on the corner of Church Street and Windsor Street) has impressed quite a few vegans with their vegan options, especially Sunday Lunch. I've not had the pizza myself but my friends are giving it rave reviews.

    Any other discoveries to share?

Can you just go into VBites for a drink then Seamus? I assumed you could only order alcohol with food as in most restaurants.

Evening Star is the best pub in Brighton, however.

When I was in Brighton for a gig at the weekend I popped into The George for the first time in years for some food. The burger and chips are still good. I can't comment on the bar selection as I was driving so just had OJ.
