Default Seitan Sausages and Burgers in the UK?

I've seen people buy them on mainland Europe, but are they available in the UK? I'm trying to cut down on soy and these would be a good freezer food for emergencies.

    Cheers

Most of the meat free products sold in the uk have a high seiten (wheat gluten) content, but then are mixed with cereals and soy for texture. I've yet to ever see wheat gluten sold in a shop (not online) in the UK in 7 years, despite quite a lot of searching. Making your own from wheat flour isn't fun. If you really want some vital wheat gluten links in the UK i can probably dig some out. Veganstore of course sells it, but imported from the US at about 10x the price it should.

i havent bought it for a while but my healthfood store often has seitan 'steaks' round burger shaped piece, about twice as thick as a burger. it is smoked though, tastes a little like hotdog sausages :S i quite like it, but in small pieces in a salad. it's about £1.99 for what i mentioned, but it does me and my partner as it is quite filling, actually very filling.

oops just read it was burgers and sausages you were looking for, sorry i went off tangent

I'd be interested in the steaks. Is it an independant or chain store? What brand are the steaks?

I've seen those steaks in Brighton, as well as seitan sausages. Here is the website of Wheaty - the company that makes them. They also make the space bars and seitan slices. Hope it helps. http://www.wheaty.de/en/home/index.htm

Fresh and Wild usually have some of those seitan slices and steaks if I remember correctly. Not sure how suitable they are for freezing, but there's one way to find out.

Any excuse for a jaunt to Brighton!!

I think the sausages were in Tai (but couldn't see them again the last time I looked) but the steaks and slices might have been in Infinity as well / instead. I'm there from Wednesday til next weekend so I'll have a look for you.

If it is hard to get away I could always get them for you and meet you at some halfway point in Sarf London for 'the exchange'!

I've now found two places locally listed as possible stockists, but I have to wait until next week to see what they have in.

I've seen wheaty products (usually square slices of smoked seitan, occasionally the steaks as well) in places like Fresh and Wild and Planet Organic in London.

eta - I see harpy mentions f&w as well, so it's not just my imagination

Joi on Percy Street are now selling freeze dried seiten. £1.50 a bag which looks like enough for 4 servings. Not tried it yet, but is the same stuff they use in thier dishes and comes in no frills freezer bags. They've also got packets of soya bean 'twists' (apparently good in stew) that look quite exciting for about £1.80 and various other things. I got a couple of bags of the seiten and twists this lunchtime, will let you know how we get on. I had a chat with a lady from there who says that they marinate theirs in a broth of soy sauce, something else I forgot and star anis.

I've had seiten things from f&w before and wasn't impressed. They were injected full of flavour, they weren't just pure seiten so could be something different.

    .

Basic Wholefoods, an independent store in Denmark Hill, Camberwell, South East London stocks the Wheaty Seitan Steaks.

yes, I also saw them at fresh&wild, the one at kensington high street has a big choice of "wheaty"-products. i also saw it at planet organic and if i remember it right also at the earth wholefoods store in kentish town.

you can freeze them without any problems. i did so several times and there was no lack of quality or taste or structure or whatever.
